Match Thread – Spurs Looking To Scupper Bielsa’s Leeds

|

Hopefully all Tottenham Hotspur fans had a good New Year’s celebration, but manager Jose Mourinho’s first team squad had the chance to make it a great start to 2021 as we welcome Marcelo Bielsa’s newly promoted Leeds United back to White Hart Lane.

Leeds don’t appear to do draws, they either win comfortably or lose comfortably and as we know, our own form is hardly predictable when it comes to what type of attacking display we might put in.

Whilst we still contend with a few knocks and niggles, having the Fulham clash postponed (at such late notice) has at least given the team a bit of an extra break and that should at least benefit us given the mental fixture list we’ve faced in the opening half of the campaign.

I don’t imagine there will be many surprises with the line up, but if you can call the first half of the season a frustrating success, let’s hope this game is a marker for how we approach the remainder of our league campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

News just emerging that 3 of our players broke social distancing on Xmas day, just what we needed right now! What is it these priviledged people don’t understand about the pandemic?

Hello HT.. Im fine thanks hope you are too.

Yes ball possession is needed to launch attacks, what we need to do is gain control of the ball and then defenders / mf look for the forwards runs and pass quickly. This where Liverpool are good and we are caught out, as not much passing options, so back and sideways it is.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Liverpool also play a high percentage of long balls too… In other words, they mix it up…

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Lloris (C), Doherty, Alderweireld, Dier, Davies, Hojbjerg, Winks, Ndombele, Bergwijn, Son, Kane

    Hi folks
    HT,
re MP I wasn’t really alluding to our defence but to our playing style, which was similar but better , however much like Leeds now, we only seemed to play one way, which left us found wanting against the likes of Man C and Liverpool on occasions.Under Poch there appeared on occasions to be no plan B. Bielsa is much the same and refused to change tack even when getting dubbed by Man U.
Don’t get me wrong we were and they are a delight to watch.
What I must laugh at TQ is, Man U get another “lucky” pen they are currently 2nd in the league, all of a sudden the pundits love em, love the tactics etc..
3 weeks ago it was us they loved our tactics.
I thought we were fickle on this site (myself included).
    Big win today

Hey there ND, hope all is well with you?

As for your post “words out of my mouth” comes to mind, well said. COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

That’s a bit more like it, we went for a second goal. Still look a bit suspect in defence with Leeds exploiting our right side when Doherty is forward and out of position.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Another couple of goals in the second half to improve our GD would be good.

  • 123spurs says:

Early on given possession away leeds dou g the same they got punished, stevie B, could ofbhad a brace. Playing well considering gun ho style by Leeds.

  • Hot Tottingam says:

    That’s all I’m asking for… Balance.

    Up the Spurs

  • 123spurs says:

    Job done
    Leeds over hyped
Kane should of been subbed early with been 3 up. Run down to the ground as usually.
    Silly 2nd yellow

    Up the Spurs!

  • wentworth says:

That was so much better to watch. Good passing, better movement and top defending. Thanks to Leeds for making a reasonable entertaining game. They have some very good ball players and stars of the future. We had the experience and the constant goal threat of Kane and Son. Superb second goal.
We have a few negatives. Bergwijn is awful in front of goal. We were playing with Winks and Davies …two uninspiring but very safe players. The biggest negative is Doherty. He looks totally out of place.Very poor performance We have to do something about the right back position. Lamptey of Brighton would be a great asset Shame we sold KWP, loads better than Aurier and Doherty. Mabe Tanganga could fit in there.
Lo Celso, Lamela, and Reguilon all fools for partying. Deserve heavy fines and bans.

  • Niall D says:

HT couldn’t have put it better my self.
But that’s how we can play. Look at the chances we created.
I have to say, I think HT said that Leeds were a team from the Championship.
And that’s how they looked today.
We were more attacking, very solid in defence, I think they had 3 or 4 on target as opposed to our 7 or 8
Best game for Winksy in a Spurs shirt.
Let’s face we were good today, not saying we turned a corner but we were good today.
Back in the mix top 3/4.
    COYS.

Now, I can celebrate the new year with a win… I’m happy!

  • Geofspurs says:

I think we all needed that. A good day at the office!

  • jod says:

I said before the game that Leeds were an all or nothing team and so it proved. It reminded me a lot of the Arsenal game although Leeds were more of a threat. Not because they were more skilful but simply because they got players forward in numbers quickly at every opportunity. Defensively they were suspect and it didn’t actually look that difficult to get the ball off them but sheer numbers meant they sometimes got it back. We should have had more goals, Bergwyn in particular missed a couple he should have put away. Doherty getting himself sent off for a second booking was plain stupidity. It all comes down to getting the second goal, only then are you in control of the game.

  • block 108 spurs says:

    A good win at last…

However spurs players were sloppy in passing and RB Doherty lacking game sharpness, hence 2 yellow cards. HK10 solid penalty and assist for sonny again. Toby again a near post header, and HK10 trying a long range shot from halfway line, good awareness. I did notice the dirty look jose gave Doherty at the end when he turned around and saw matt standing there. Words in his ear in dressing room i think, along with tanguy for walking off in a stropp.

Spurs back in 3rd for few hrs. There are 6 of top 10 teams with same points, not seen this before in PL.

    • Carlos Mota says:

It’s good to see all this spurs fans with a smile, sometimes it semms you forgetting not every team it’s MU that keep winning games with offers from referees, VAR or just pure luck ,asbo keep saying wait for the end of the season because we have good team good players and a good coach even if some of you dislike him ( let that for the opposition and pundits) and we can end up with good things in the end LETS GO SPURS

  • block 108 spurs says:

That 6 of top 10 teams on same points was before spurs won today..
