Match Thread – Spurs Looking To Out Think The Foxes

|

Tottenham Hotspur still have slim hopes of reaching the Europa League this season, but with only two games now remaining in the 2019/20 calendar, it means manager Jose Mourinho simply has to take six points from both Leicester City this Sunday, and then Crystal Palace in a weeks time, if we are to have a European adventure in 2020/21.

Unbeaten in four, with back to back victories, should give us some confidence of achieving just that, and Harry Kane will certainly be in good spirits having crashed through the 200 goals marker – but we all know our play is far from perfect and massive questions remain about performances.

Leicester...

Win

Draw

Lose

Whatever does happen with the chase for Europe, we all know it’s mainly about taking some form, momentum and confidence into next season to try and put what has been a massively difficult, and extremely poor year, completely behind us.

Sensible strengthening to really freshen up the group and what many hope will be a major defensive rebuild would put us on the right track again, but until then, all eyes to the fourth placed Foxes as anything other than a win, simply won’t be good enough.

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

Now reading Vorm and Vert’s likely to leave in a week’s time after such loyal service especially Vert’s! Can only wish them well but would hate to see Vert’s go elsewhere and still perform to a level that would be acceptable for us especially for next season!

As I said above – he can cover LB aswell as play his normal LCB position and I think that is vital for us especially with only having Davies as a regular LB and Sessegnon still pretty much having to learn the ropes there fully! Could be a big mistake letting him leave but I guess part of it could be wanting to save on his salary as he’s not a regular starter anymore! Also surely a great influence and educator on the likes of Tanganga, Sessegnon, etc but so be it – nothing I can do about it unfortunately and I’m a bloody share-holder at that lol!

ND….I must admit! I was one of the biggest fans saying “NO” to JM’s appointment, but then got stuck on the fence with him, now, though still not a great lover of him, I am in the camp of how you said…”So lets give him a transfer window and full proper season”

It might be just me but I am seeing something different/ better every game as the player’s start to learn/adhere to his systems, ok! we may never see the “Spurs way”, Poch tried it and failed, under his regime, but I think there is a far better chance of us winning something. COYS

HT – with players like Lo Celso, Dele, Moura, Bergwijn, Lamela, Sonny, HK10 and even N’Dombele (if he finally decides to turn up that is lol), etc there’s always hope that a decent brand of football can be played once they have all become accustomed to one another and an ethos starts to be built. Dele, Lo Celso, Sonny, Bergwijn and HK10 aswell as Lamela and N’Dombele have all had major injuries this season meaning lots of time on the side and not playing regularly especially with each other – so very little chance for an understanding to develop and said ethos to start being built!

Hopefully next season they will not be out injured for so long and so many of them at the same time – allowing them all or most of them to play together with each other regularly and start developing understandings and a way of playing/ethos, etc!

It will naturally also help them if JM can add some decent defensive signings as I have described fully on here IMHO and finally set-up a solid unit at the back from which we can then move forwards and look to build/develop our attacking play much more regularly.

Will need some clever signings this summer especially defensively and then some time for it all to come together properly but like I say there’s got to be hope with the quality of our attacking players – both in terms of decent footy being played and results continuing to be picked up on a more regular basis!

Hot Tottingham What if this ? what if that ? here’s what I know. We failed to win anything in 5 years under Poch, that tells me we need to do something different. Jose has a strong record of winning trophies for different clubs, that tells me he knows what he’s doing. So while nothing is certain I would say his way is well worth a try. “It might not work so let’s not do it” is just accepting failure.

    • Hot Tottingham says:

I can say my bit jod but still back him…. And I am… If/When we do win something with Jose, then I will celebrate with the rest of you….

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Stop it with your Portugeezer voodoo charms EJ…

I submit again to your undying (Spurs) positivity.

Hey, no matter what I’m writing today about Jose etc; I’m in good mood. I just love it when Harry and Son do their superstar stuff.

I’m just having a bit of fun on here today….. I’m off back to work tonight after a short break on the sunny Costa Delboy streets of Sarf London! Not really what I would call a summer holiday. But I mustn’t grumble…… Anymore.

Love and peace and safety to you all……. I’m now going out to mingle with the Great British virus spreading public… See ya!

  • El Jefe says:

Bruxeria LOL HT – hope springs eternal – let’s wait and see and keep hoping for the best – it might just happen lol!

It turns out I was right to be positive on Friday, etc about yesterday in the end!

Might give it a bit of a rest for now also and come back later – maybe tonight to see what’s been going on!

  • Niall D says:

PY, Jod, EJ 100% agree on your thread here. Good stuff.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Some great posts on this thread from both sides of the Jose argument all with valid opinions. As I have said before, we are so difficult to watch at the moment and if it trophies we are looking for then they won’t come playing this brand of football. We will be swept aside by the best teams who won’t waste as many chances as our opponents have done in recent games and who won’t be so naive defensively.

Isn’t it great that there is such a healthy debate taking place now that the delayed posting issue is fixed….take note Vital Spurs….. and don’t be so tardy the next time you screw up the site!

  • El Jefe says:

I remember reading previously that Sessegnon is on roughly £70K a week with us but I’ve also now read over the weekend that we’ve only offered Tanganga a new contract of £15K a week – surely that can’t be right and there can’t be that much difference between the 2 and no wonder Tanganga’s agent, etc is stalling and looking for more?!

Sessegnon is 20 and has played 12 games for us so far, Tanganga is 21 and has played 11! Fair play Sessegnon has his Championship experience behind him but that has hardly put him in good stead so far in the Prem has it lol?! Both have heavily represnted England at various youth levels! We’ve got to seriously up the offer for Tanganga surely and make sure he stays – I’m not expecting him to leave but think it imperative that he gets paid a decent wage in comparison to his team-mates and with Sessegnon on what he is, surely Tanganga should probably be pushing around the £50K mark at a minimum?!

I remember a lot of discussion on here last year regarding respective wages and how they might affect team spirit and morale, etc within the squad as a whole aswell as individually and only the other day Jod and myself agreed how important it is to have such in abundance to help build a base and also help get results, etc especially in the harder games where we need to stick together and try harder and have better tactics and have all following such!

Let’s hope Levy, etc stops messing around and get’s Tanganga signed up long term like Parrott and Skipp already (I fully expect him to of course but hope it’s on decent terms so there is no chance for resentment especially later) and the same goes for any future signings this summer also!

  • El Jefe says:

BBC gossip saying that Man City likely to tie up Ake for only £35m shortly – bloody good deal if they get it done – I thought minimum would be the supposed £40m as regards a Chelski return clause in his Bournemouth contract indeed I even thought more like £45-50m to be honest – shame we can’t get him in for that as he’s a top CB IMHO and would be a perfect compliment at LCB to the likes of Toby and Davy at RCB even if he’s a bit short – LOL!

That said liking the links to this South Korean Kim Min-jae (even though again he’s right footed) – sounds very interesting indeed – 6ft3, supposedly quick also and good on the ball on top – still only 23 and already got 30 caps for South Korea! The Korean/Asian VVD apparently lol! For the reported £10m (as were naturally trying to get him on the cheap as usual lol) can we really go that wrong?! I mean we’ve in the past paid around this for the likes of NJie, Nkoudou even Clarke last summer so got to be worth a punt surely?!

If he develops anywhere near like Sonny – what a bloody bargain and star we’d have on our hands! Worst case we could sell him on and get a decent amount of our money back given he’s still pretty young and has apparently been a star performer in Asia (Korea and China)!

Will fully trust JM on this if he decides to bring him in and Levy can get the bloody deal done lol!

  • El Jefe says:

No more news for now on the likes of Castagne and Hojbjerg who I’ve lately been championing on here based on us being regularly linked to them and them playing in position’s we desperately need filling IMHO (especially 1st team position’s for me – RB and DMC) and also as they are both in the final year of their contract’s at lesser clubs and wanting to come to us apparently making them very realistic targets indeed – hopefully there’ll be much more movement and news from next Monday when the summer transfer window officially opens and we can tie up our targets (these 2 mentioned for example hopefully) quickly for a change and get them in ASAP for JM to be able to incorporate them all fully into what will be an already shortened pre-season, etc!

  • El Jefe says:

Even with Wolves winning last night – fully expect them to drop points against Chelski at Stamford Bridge on Sunday (indeed Chelski may still need to get something in that game to secure a top 4 spot and CL for next season) and again no reason for us to fear Palace who have lost 7 on the bounce now I believe so we have to go there full of confidence especially on the back of our 3 good victories lately (not to mention Sonny and especially HK10’s top form) and thus fully expecting us to get 6th spot finally and properly secure that EL place!

Even on a bad day a draw with Palace will secure for us a top 7 finish even if Arse win both their last 2 games which I expect them too (Villa and Watford I believe – but won’t be easy for the Scum with these 2 fighting for their Prem lives but as I say I’m going on overall quality telling in the end)! I would then expect Chelski to beat Arse in the FA Cup final (again relying on overall quality) – meaning we’ll still get into the EL via said 7th!

In other words for now fully expecting us to get a EL spot for next season – very confident indeed – hope it doesn’t blow up in my/our faces though! It’s not the CL but it’s still Europe and for all the reason’s I gave yesterday – worth it overall (thanks PY, etc for agreeing with me for example lol)!

That’s my take on the situation anyway – reasonably obvious one but still not assured so here’s hoping……..!

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Our fate is indeed in Chelsea’s hands right now EJ, if they can beat Wolves on Sunday we will only need a draw at Palace to get 6th and ensure EL next season. If we only finish 7th and the gooners are below us we will lose the EL place if they win the FA cup so again we would be reliant on Chelsea beating them in the cup final.

  • El Jefe says:

One last thing why are we being linked with the likes of Gray especially but even Fraser and Willian still?!

We have 4 proper wingers as it is with Sonny, Moura, Bergwijn and Lamela and then Dele, Lo Celso, Sessegnon and even Sissoko and Fernandes can cover there also so what the hell is it with these links lol?!

If we’re going to buy a forward player this summer then surely it has to be a proper STR/CF who can cover HK10 end of!

Would be nice to see us getting linked with such for a change as opposed to more bloody wingers all the time, etc lol!

Not that I’m giving them much credence but still it’s annoying sifting through this crap daily/regularly, etc ffs lol!

  • El Jefe says:

    Just read the following:

RSS61 – My take on our situation is that we need upgrades on RB and LB also DM and another striker. What chances?

Alasdair Gold says: I can see a right-back, defensive midfielder, another striker and possibly another centre-back. Not too sure whether they will see left-back as a priority with Davies there now and Sessegnon for the future, with Cirkin seen as a big talent coming through.

Hmmm seem’s he agrees with my little list of 4 players and the specific position’s I’ve said are required as I’ve been banging on about above, etc – bring them on finally LOL!

  • Niall D says:

EJ that’s all our list of players. However being Spurs, our chairman scouts will probably buy 2 wingers from the crap French League for 50 mil. Lol.

  • El Jefe says:

ND – yes I know you agree with me but not sure everyone else on here does lol!

Let’s wait and see what happens starting next Monday.

In the mean time I see Dier has signed a new 4 year contract – decent news I suppose – let’s see how he gets on at CB then next season – I still need to be fully convinced but he’s certainly worth having as is very versatile – can definitely cover CB, DMC, etc! Let’s just hope he goes on to fully establish himself in his re-discovered position!

Thought there’d be more discussion on here today tbh – oh well so be it lol………..!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Dier has signed a new 4 year deal… So that’s 3 positions sorted. RB, CD and DM… 🙂

  • El Jefe says:

Morning HT – I’d be over the moon if Dier re-establishes himself fully as a CB for us as it appears that he is going to be used there regularly from next season. I agree he can cover at DMC for sure if necessary and maybe even RB if we are really desperate but the most important thing now is for him to concentrate fully on becoming a good reliable CB for us end of!

  • Geofspurs says:

EJ …. Players being linked to Spurs in the media means zilch. I agree with you that we are well positioned with the wingers we have. As far as the news outlets are concerned it’s a matter of ‘no news is bad news’ …. so they make their own news!
