Match Thread – Spurs Looking To Bust Burnley Open & Get Back On Track

|

With Tottenham Hotspur firing themselves past Pellets in our midweek Europa encounter, Spurs now know we will face Dinamo Zagreb in the Round of 16 but before we can get carried away with that, we will be looking to get our Premier League form back on track when we welcome Sean Dyche’s Burnley battlers to White Hart Lane this coming Sunday.

With five defeats in our last six games, plenty of confidence can be taken from Wednesday’s clash and plenty of Spurs fans will be hoping manager Jose Mourinho takes the shackles off and we get a decent run out from Dele Alli and Gareth Bale to further boost Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min’s goal hopes.

We could even potentially welcome back the enigma that is Serge Aurier after his spell on the injury sidelines – but Giovani Lo Celso will remain out of contention for at least another couple of weeks as he comes back to fitness.

Burnley won’t be a walkover, no teams at this level are really, but again, there’s no real reason we shouldn’t be confident going into the game, we just need to ensure we turn up.

At last after a long time.. spurs back in the PL winning in style. Bale class showed how he has matured, movement and goal chances taken Man of Match IMO. This has shown Jose and others what we can do, and I think more of the same to come next few weeks. Well pleased, but.. still a few sloppy passes and errors, just to mention that 4-0 could have been 6-0. Now onto to next game Dynomo Z. COYS

Bale is definitely in the swing of it now

  • PompeyYid says:

That will do for me, more like it Spurs
One two football at speed, push n run anyone lol!
All wanting the ball, great movement.
A bit of the old Poch style in there at times.

Gareth is nearly back, not quite 100%, but what an addition to our front line, great MOM performance.

But! what a game by Sanchez, commanding or what, didn’t get bullied at all.
Aurier, love him or hate him, did a good job also.

    Iceman n N’Dombele what a pairing.

Are the real Spurs back, I certainly hope so, from that game its might just be happening. COYS

block….Fulham is our next game on Thursday.

  • Niall D says:

Great result and excellent performance all round. Bale is back, happy days, went through the gears once or twice easily MOM for me. All our attacking players had at least 2 shots on goal a vintage Spurs performance. Will agree Sanchez had a good game.
For me it has now shown that our performances are better if we can rest or rotate our team, as we did this week, I think our last time when our first 11 had a weeks break was the Sheffield game (not sure) but the rest definately showed.
Still not really happy with our playing out from the back.
But good game good front foot performance and I was entertained.
Maybe JM is starting to learn something of the Spurs way.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I hope PEH is ok, he turned his ankle quite badly just before the end of the game.

    Jose in

    And palce after fulham,

  • TK says:

Love the optimism you express, Niall, but do you really think Mourinho is big on personal growth? He’ll not learn the Spurs way. If does change a bit, he’ll claim its his personal invention.

  • Danny Winter says:

Maybe I should try not watching in future?

  • Niall D says:

    Well TK,
No matter how it happens or who claims the benefit, I’ll take performances like that over the dross we watched around Christmas. Everyone was calling for a performance like this and gradually just this month (probably starting with the Everton game) it has been coming. Just enjoyed the game and the result.
Hopefully we can keep it up against Fulham, and Palace we owe both of em.

  • TK says:

We all are relieved to see today’s play over the period of boring dross we recently lived (and died) though.

  • TK says:

Danny Winter: I’m not sure I grasp your point. Sometimes I can be a bit dense.

    • Danny Winter says:

From all accounts a brilliant performance with some great goals – and I was otherwise engaged so completely missed it. Just wondered if it might be an omen?

  • Niall D says:

That’s always the way Danny, we had a delivery and I missed the first goal. DK

  • TK says:

Danny, sorry you missed it, but I hope you see years of similar results. It was not an omen as regards your absence.

Niall D, sorry you missed the first Bale goal. Fortunately, there are replays galore these days.

  • Niall D says:

Yes folks was in time for the replay. I hope this isn’t yet another false dawn, we’ve had so many this, season, just when I think we’re heading into the wind, a mistake or a VAR decision costscus a game then downward spiral of poor play low confidence and lost matches.
I just hope this starts a run of good wins for us COYS.

I love the way Jose is getting criticism for not playing Bale when he wasn’t fit. The simple fact is its taken Gareth a long time to get to this stage and only now is he worth starting. Even now reading Mourinho’s comments he’s not likely to last 90 minutes. Still he can do some serious damage while he’s on the pitch. Nice to see someone else noticed Sanchez. To me he’s always been a frustrating player. All the tools to be a top defender, good in the tackle and in the air, strong and quick. But he’s always let himself down by his mistakes. If he’s finally cutting the errors out then we might start seeing a better defence. Looking at the league table we are not as far back as I’d thought. Chelsea and United dropped points yesterday, Chelsea play Liverpool next. Leicester have lost Harvey Barnes, whose been crucial for them, for the rest of the season and will struggle to maintain momentum. Of course unless we start playing consistent football it doesn’t matter what is happening to the competition. We’ll see what happens against Fulham.

    • Geofspurs says:

jod …. You’ll see that I mentioned Sanchez in a comment at HT. His tackling/interceptions is probably why we kept a clean sheet.

  • Allan says:

Yep a lovely performance against a spirited and relegation threatened team .
As we saw vs West Ham once Bale came onto the pitch he made such a difference to the team as yesterday showed .. I liked the way when Moura stopped attempting to dribble past the entire opposition his link up play was excellent . Dele can’t run but give him space and time then he could hopefully produce some of the form of a couple of years ago . A negative in that we still , in the latter stages , played some sloppy passes and when pressed lobbed long balls forward inviting attacks .
I just wished Levy had bought an experienced and quality CB because I feel that none of our CB pairings work successfully . In the last 2 matches there was not a great deal of pressure but against quality oppostion ?
As a final plea . Please don’t let ourselves down reverting to the non football seen recently but play to win by putting on the style and hope for a decent run until the end of the season and who knows ?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Allan, I agree regards the need for a quality centre back but we did bring in a young guy who looks pretty decent, and hasn’t done much wrong in his few appearances, but he hasn’t even been on the bench for the past few matches.

  • jod says:

In the final analysis while everyone focuses on the attack the fact we defended better is actually more important. If you can’t defend then the midfield have to drop back to cover the defenders and the forwards are isolated. Alternatively you attack anyway and get taken apart on the counter. But against Burnley we defended better which freed up the midfield to go forward. Its not about style, its about defenders doing their job properly and Jose has found it tough to make that happen so far. I suspect we are still looking at signing a central defender in the summer.
