Match Thread – Can Spurs Make It Our Turf At Burnley Or Does The Year Get Worse

|

So, Tottenham Hotspur fans are still pouring over the poor defeat in midweek to Norwich City in the fifth round of the FA Cup and with the game being our fourth defeat on the spin across all competitions, there’s not an awful lot of confidence as we prepare for our trip to Turf Moor to take on Burnley in Saturday’s late kick off.

Burnley...

Win

Draw

Lose Again

What could be said about Norwich has been but there are definitely questions surrounding the Burnley clash and manager Jose Mourinho basically implied post-game that players were running on empty.

“As you can expect it was a difficult game, as I could expect some of my players were really, really in trouble and they made an incredible effort to try. Harry Winks was completely dead. I think he’s started 11 to 12 games in a row, we had many, many players in trouble. I don’t have one single negative feeling towards my players, the opposite, they tried fantastic things. I am really, really sad for the boys, I can cope with the bad result and with negative moments, I’ve had so many, but I am really sad for the players. In this moment I have to think about what’s next and I have to speak to my club because I think some of these boys to have a chance to fight Tuesday for a Champions League position they just can’t play on Saturday. Particularly in forward positions, behind we’ve got options but not going forward.”

There will be those who agree with Mourinho when he talks about our forward positions given the injuries we have and our upcoming games, but equally, there will be those questioning selections and having odd players wildly out of position, which certainly can’t be helping their own confidence.

Youngster Troy Parrott was decent in my eyes and got himself into the mix, but you certainly wouldn’t expect to see him in this one given Burnley’s more physical approach, but the biggest question – as ever – is which Spurs side will turn up, regardless of who Jose picks.

Should the Champions League even be a priority given our domestic form – our upcoming matches don’t exactly get easier?

To ease the further growing tensions, we need a win and to draw a line though…and the more negative just can’t see it coming.

To Dare Is To Do and all that, but will we?

Lose this one, followed by Leipzig and then Man U and then what will happen. I can see us no more than mid table this season. We could lose 7 matches on the trot. Great record Jose. Hopefully, he will push off once the crowd starts agitating on March 20th at home to W,Ham. Jose was never the right choice. He is past it. Watching his miserable face and listening to his stupid comments are the worst experience our club has had to endure since One Day Ramos. Bite the bullet…get rid of Jose or force him to resign. How do we get rid of Levy too. Utter disaster. A stand has to be made. We are stuck in a rut and spiralling down.

  • PompeyYid says:

w….you could be right there, but get rid now, then who else is going to take up what is becoming a poison chalice.

lets be honest this is our first really bad season for a few years now, and so some of us have become expectant, I believe we are at the bottom so the only way is up!

Lets just give JM a pre-season and next season to see how things unfold, mind the anti’s will keep on enforcing their wish for the departure of JM, am personally not with them and all for giving the man another minimum of a year.

As for Burnley, the fanatic in me says we will win, but the negative in me says only one result..defeat. COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Burnley are unbeaten in their last six league games. Their game is based on solid defence, bus parking if you like, which we all know we find difficult to break down, even with Kane and Son. If our players are as knackered as suggested, and with Burnley having had a full weeks rest, you have to think it’s going to be a tough ask to get anything from the game.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Given that we don’t have our two top goal scorers available. Seeing as our entire squad is now knocking on deaths door. And that it looks to me like the special bus parking one has lost the keys to his bus …
I reckon we’re looking like losers already and regardless of the oppositions current good form……

Then again, given all of the current negativity from our coach, supporters, media, pundits, Harry, St. George, Elvis and the Queen… And even me! Maybe our poor downtrodden players will find some solidarity and become united and fully galvanised in their team-spirited need to to prove us all wrong. Maybe!

    Burnley 0-4 Spurs!

    Maybe not!

    • TQ2Spurs says:

After your prediction that Watford would beat Liverpool I’m not going to dispute any prediction you make for this match HT! 🙂

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Why give Jose a pre-season. It is clear that he has no clue what he is doing. He can’t set up a team anymore, it seems his only tactic is to match the formation he thinks the opposition will produce. There is no imagination and no inventiveness, . The team appears neither to be set up to stop the opposition from playing nor to impose itself on the opposition. It is truly depressing watching Spurs at the moment. He has been out-coached by Naglesman, Lampard and Nuno Santos. He is negative on the pitch and even more negative off it. The excuses he is coming out with are to serve only one purpose, to excuse HIMSELF for the poor results. His comments re Parrott after the game on Wednesday were an absolute disgrace but entirely predicttable from a “I told you so” “it’s not my fault” manager.
Why would we trust him with the limited funds that will be made available in the summer. Why on earth would anyone expect that with a pre-season his playing style would suddenly change and that we will suddenly play fast attacking winning football.
    Jose out now.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

For me DH and given this time of the season; I don’t feel the need for fast, attacking football. But I do expect at least some semblance of attacking football. And I do expect a more positive attitude. Much like Norwich had on Wednesday. And especially given their PL position and where their priorities must lie…

Norwich were knackered before the 90 mins were up and it was by their sheer effort to win the match. Spurs were defeated before they kicked off. Their excuse? They were already knackered before the kick-off… And that ain’t even funny…

  • Parklaneyido says:

I never liked the idea of Jose managing us, and at the moment, I’m not sure I like the style of play either, but I agree it’s too early to judge. If at the end of next season we haven’t made progress and are out of the top 4, then I’ll agree he’s not up to it. Until then his record earns him the right to be given chance (even if we don’t really like or trust him).

As for fatigue, not sure I buy that either. Norwich players were the ones cramping up in the main from what I saw. Going out at this stage could be a blessing though, as it leaves us with just the 2 competitions that really count to focus on.

Good wins tomorrow and Tuesday could be the start of a strong run of form. Plus I wouldn’t be surprised if Kane and Son were back playing by the end of March

    COYS!

  • OyvehMaria says:

For Jose to set up a pre season and get a squad togethrer we have to assume that Levy is willing to go back to the treasure chest and give Jose enough money to buy a new back four for our knackered or classless defence…….well I supose he will have the £150m from the sale of Harry Kane! lets hope we dont piss it up against the wall like we did with the Bale money !

  • El Jefe says:

Not expecting much to be honest – as TQ has said Burnley are un-beaten in 6 and are at home – we’re going there knackered by all accounts and with an inability to defend well in general aswell as a mountain of injuries especially up front so does not bode well at all – also will minds be focused on this game or on Tuesday’s match with Leipzig?!

That said, if we win with Utd playing Man City and possibly losing/drawing it’s an opportunity to catch them and go into next weekend’s game on atleast an even keel and see what happens there. If I was a betting man I’d back against us on all counts at the moment though – the odds simply don’t stack up – it’s tough – we’ll just have to give our best shot and then most probably re-group for next season when hopefully things will be better!

  • El Jefe says:

Oyveh – surely HK10 IF he goes which I don’t think he will to be honest not this summer yet, but if he did should be in the £200-250m bracket. At £150m that’s a lot of money to give up and that we’ll need to continue the re-build – we’d then need 2 good strikers at minimum and atleast a RB and a LCB in defence. I know he’s had his injuries but he’s still probably the best STR/CF in world football and his price has to reflect this. £150m for HK10 – na come back with another offer and make it interesting would be my answer LOL!

  • Geofspurs says:

Despite the fact that we are playing away from home I am absolutely certain that we will get a result against Burnley. I am not, however, absolutely certain what that result might be. But, hey, let’s enjoy it anyway. : – )

  • Hot Tottingham says:

It’s got to the point whereby I could actually start to enjoy losing matches. But, only if we can play some good football along the way.

Given the choice of losing when playing negative and overly defensive football. Or, losing after giving a right good go and with our players showing some of their obvious flair. I’ll take the latter please.

Thing is though, it’s doing the latter that will more than likely (in my most humble opinion) give us the much needed win… Oh, what a curious dilemma!

Then again, what do I know? I ain’t won titles and cups, have !?! Then again, again…. Neither has Poch!

Funny ol’ game! Hahaha! Boom, boom!

Burnley 5-5 Spurs! Better than losing, init!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

….. Or is it? Is losing the new drawing. And is drawing, the new winning? Is defending the new attacking?

Alternately, I could be giving my expert tactical footballing masterclass on here and not be so silly… But, I’m afraid that Jose will just ignore me yet again… Loser!

  • block 108 spurs says:

As I said on the previous thread…Our players and manager need to stop the losing sequence. So as I am always an optimistic spurs fan… A 1 goal win margin for spurs. But will settle for a draw. COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Settling for a draw vs Burnley is indeed optimistic of you Block…

I thought I was being optimistic in hoping at least for some positive, good attacking football from Spurs and yet losing! 🙁

  • PompeyYid says:

As has been said by HT, give it a go and lose fair enough, but at least it could be said “we tried” and were unlucky blah blah.

That being said, giving it a go, we might just win, its as simple as that.

The optimist in me is hoping for a win and a good performance from us would be the “icing on the cake”. COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

Lets play that stupid game of “name that team” to play Burnley this evening…

    Lloris

    Tangy…Dier…Toby…Davies

    Skipp…N’Dombele

    Dele

    Gedson…Bergy…Lo-Celso

Just some thoughts, what about you lot? lets have a smile, cos it ain’t the end of the world YET! lol! COYS

  • Ho Tottingham says:

I do try to make people smile… But some Spurs fans don’t like me when I’m happy. Not even when we’re winning…

Actually, my words against Jose are me mimicking him in a way. He likes to see the negative in his players whilst praising them in a strangely patronising and condescending way and and letting the world know about it. He likes to patronise us supporters as well. Just listen to what he said about Parrott before he played him and then after he played him…

  • TQ2Spurs says:

PY……I don’t think anyone can second guess the ‘special one’ in terms of the line-up for this game, it’s difficult to know whether he is going to prioritise the PL or the CL as our players are apparently too knackered to win both.

Let’s be honest, with our current situation we ‘aint going to win the CL, getting a top 5 finish in the PL is still a possibility so gaining CL football for next season. Our best bet of achieving something this season was the FA cup but that boat was allowed to leave port without us.

My view…..play our strongest team today and then whoever is fit enough at Leipzig on Tuesday.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    I agree with you TQ2.

Even so, I actually don’t care too much who Jose picks. Not even for a bit of fun… I’m more concerned about how he gets them up to play. Win, lose or draw. CL or PL…
