Match Thread – A Palace Of A Distraction But Spurs Have To Look To 2020/21

|

It’s been a strange old season and it’s been a strange calendar year for Tottenham Hotspur. The highs of the Champions League Final and then the lows of seeing our form and usual performance levels fall through the floor – but Crystal Palace this Sunday is a final chance for some joy before we tick quickly into the 2020/21 season.

What kind of performance we see from Jose Mourinho’s charges is absolutely anyone’s guess, but the first half showing against Leicester City certainly gave some cheer and fans would welcome more of that, but there is also the Europa League question to answer and it will go down to the final day’s results with us currently sat in seventh place in the table and a point behind Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Whatever Sunday may bring, the curtain on 2019/20 comes down and we all know we need to strengthen further in the summer, we need a decent pre-season and we need to hit next year running, otherwise fears that the wheels have truly fallen off the Spurs bus will grow.

We can’t allow all that progress and a nice and bright shiny new stadium to fall away as our Champions League hopes did this season. The only question is, will we?

Until then, Palace and all three points, please!

P.S. to be fair to Ake at international level he is behind VVD at LCB for Holland after all lol!

Anyway he’s not our’s so hope he flops big time at City lol – but somehow doubt it, indeed Pep knows damn well what he is doing and it’s not as if he’s restricted on the money front or it’s that hard to attract top talent to City, etc!

As for Davy and Tanguy – we live on in hope lol……….!

    • Hot Tottingham says:

I personally don’t think that Ake walks straight into Pep’s first team as a regular to be honest with you…. Which from my perspective it is a lot of money for a back-up. But, for City it’s a relatively cheap punt imo. But for the likes of Spurs it would b e a very expensive punt…

By the way, after the billion and more that Peps City have spent on players, there have been many players that haven’t lived up to their value. (one or two more expensive than Ake and others a lot cheaperI) It happens at all clubs. Pep may be a great coach but he’s not a magician. It’s also down to the player as well…

HT….our colours history, as am one of those obsessive fans it is brilliant to see and read.

You mentioned Pele10, remember reading all his moans and groans and back bites at others, this was all before I decided to join in, there a lot more that are sorely missed, mixing and matching keeps things interesting. COYS

  • El Jefe says:

HT – I don’t think Walker was for sale either but he still went (I’ll accept his head was turned by City in the end) and indeed if City rated Davy (again whose head I’m sure would be turned) they would come in for him no problem but I guess they don’t lol!

Agreed Ake not our player so no point wasting more time (as I implied in my last post also lol) on him and agreed the prices overall are crazy lol!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I thin k it was more that Poch turned Walker’s head. It was well reported that Walker was angry with him that Trippier was more and more MP’s first choice. And when City came in for him, MP didn’t bat an eyelid. Whereas when United wanted Dier for instance, Poch said no way is he for sale, for any money. Levy sold Walker with MP’s blessings as far as I can tell…

At the time EJ, many Spurs supporters thought that Levy had played a blinder getting £50m for Kyle. Because they thought that he was highly overrated. He really did get called a liability on here on a regular basis… Just like Trippier and now Serge…

It goes to show how wrong so many supporters can be. But also how right others are. But it’s always in hindsight that we can say for sure who was wrong or right…

Anyway I think Alves was Pep’s first choice. But he chose PSG…

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I don’t think Pep will be concerned about Ake’s height, I think he has been bought more for his ability with the ball on the ground, we all know he likes to play out from the back. If you were looking for a player who is good in the air defensively Mings would have been a better buy and Bournemouth sold him to Villa for half the price, he has a pretty decent turn of speed as well.

  • 123spurs says:

not a fan of the red, stones to spurs?, lets wake up arsenal another cup final, we need to change our mentality.

  • 123spurs says:

dele cost 5 mil bargin?, great few seasons, and bang, so many players hes age and younger ahead of him noe, dele is worthless and pointless in a team for top4. He needs to step up, id rather maddison in my team. Spurs needs to get ruthless and to dare is to do bull shit where has that got us

  • El Jefe says:

HT/TQ – some good food for thought there – thanks!

HT – at the time of Walker’s sale I was not posting regularly on here anymore but was not very happy with it even though at the time it was a decent amount of money and with City calling he wanted to go unfortunately – but I always had high hopes for him from the start and rated him highly (did have similar feelings about Naughton originally but you can’t get them all right unfortunately), Rose not as much but still respected him all the same and again was not impressed when Man You were apparently circling around the same kind of time and again £40-50m or so was being touted! Indeed we had just finished 2nd with the tightest defence in the league and I was hoping we’d keep building on it, not break it up – then Walker got sold, Rose and Toby had serious injuries and the rest is history!

Walker was of course right to leave no doubt given his success at Man City and this helps to prove those who rated him highly correct in doing so also – shame though it is!

On Ake I would have loved him (shortness aside lol – as I’m sure many on here would also lol) to partner Toby short term and hopefully Davy/Dier/Tanganga long term not to mention he could cover LB also and even DMC if necessary – shame because at £41m I think it’s a great price given what as I said we’ve already paid for Davy in our past and what the likes of VVD and Maguire went for recently – sure he’s coming from a relegated team but so did Robertson for example at Liverpool from Hull and he’s now arguably the best LB in the Prem even the world lol – just goes to show and in only 3 season’s at best!

Sure for us he would be a massive signing – we’ve only ever paid £40m+ on 3 occassion’s and he’s a defender after all but that did not stop us forking out £42m for a young and in-experienced CB in Davy did it and also baring in mind that for example that a certain JM at around that time had targeted him as a weak link in the EL final of 2017 – we still went ahead and bought him for a record amount at the time!

I actually think he could walk straight into Man City’s team (and our team for that matter given he’s a specialised LCB) and partner Laporte – indeed young Garcia has been doing the job lately but I don’t think that will last into next season not with them about to sign Ake!

On Davy – I actually rate him and just get so frustrated when he commits errors/mistakes which have been quite regular for some time now – indeed HT I agree he had a monster of a game against England in the 2018 WC and also against Argentina in the Copa America 2019, etc and it’s based on these, etc where my expectation’s rise and I rate him but then I feel so let down when he messes up for us when I think there’s a great CB there in the making overall! He’s still only 24 so I still harbour hope of what he could become – same as Tanguy also but we were definitely ripped off on the pair of them – that’s for sure!

On Mings he could actually have been a decent shout but I doubt JM would still have gone for him all the same as I stated a while back ago on here when his name was first mentioned by TQ himself (perhaps not seen as good enough for us anymore?!) and also I doubt Villa would sell him now given their safety anyway!

Always advantageous to have the complete package if possible – example for a CB – height, power, strength,, speed, good feet ideally (although 1 will do lol), etc, etc, etc can anyone suggest a VVD alternative lol?!

  • El Jefe says:

HT – I think for Maguire a reasonable price would have been around £60m or so – certainly a top Prem CB (had a great WC 2018 with England for example) indeed I remember some on here including myself and TQ if memory serves would have liked him signed but clearly no way could we afford him let alone would he be interested in coming anyway?! Man You over paid to the tune of around £20m but there’s nothing wrong with that is there – LOL!

Also I would rather have Maguire than Davy although I would not want to be paying double the amount that’s for sure lol!

  • El Jefe says:

Actually scrap that last comment lol because Davy for me tops should have been £30m at an absolute maximum (young and very little experience – indeed we had only paid Ajax £11.5m for Eriksen in 2013 and he was a better prospect at that time than respectively Davy was in 2017 and Ajax are a selling club – they always need money lol) whereas I can respect Harry Maguire going for around £60m or so after having proven himself as a top Prem CB with Leicester (having originally already cost some £20m similar to what Bournemouth paid Chelski for Ake also) and also a top international CB with England furthermore – so even at double bubble I still think he would be worth it – although that’s not to say he’s twice as good as Davy, he is better but that’s just the way the market is especially for experienced English Prem players unfortunately!

  • El Jefe says:

P.S. IF Walker was worth around £50m in 2017, then Maguire at £60m in 2019 had to be reasonable for sure – just like I stated above! Also just noted Maguire also left relegated Hull just like Robertson in 2017 for Leicester for around £17m all inclusive – go figure lol!

  • Niall D says:

Hi folks any body looking for some cr#p footie tonite. BBC norn Ireland has The Irish Cup Final. Kick off around 8 pm. Its Glentorn against Ballymena.
Glentorn are a bit of a Spurs side played nice football (to NI standard) but we’re overshadowed by Linfield. They are from Belfast.
The other team are Ballymena. Something like the old Ipswich. Country boys. But this year they have one of the top managers who have brought em up a bit.
The main thing about this game which may interest you is the fact that this will be the first UK match played b4 a crowd since Covid.
Who do I favour. The Glen’s Funnily enough they have a cockrel as their badge. They are often called the cock’n’hens over here.
    So if you’re bored….

Today I’m a Chelsea supporter …. football works in mysterious ways!

  • jod says:

While I rate Ake the idea he’s some kind of wonder player is a bit far fetched. City already have a better central defender in Laporte and originally thought they had another in Stones. the problem for them is they never replaced Kompany and Ake certainly won’t do that.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

When supporters only seem to rate Spurs players according to the mistakes that they are perceived as always making; are they then presuming that somehow the players from other clubs that they rate as better, don’t also make mistakes?

I’m pretty sure that they do. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Maguire, Ake, Virgil VD even… They all mess up.

When I show my support for the likes of Dier and Sanchez, it’s not because I don’t ever see them also mess up. They do. They all do. But it also seems to me that almost every goal that Spurs concede these days is down to our individual defenders all being poor as opposed to the defence as a whole having to take some responsibility. Or indeed, that they were simply undone by the skills of the opposition.

Funnily, if a supporter is not keen on the current manager they will blame it on his poor tactics. But if they like the manager, it’s then the fault of the players. It is of course possible that it is down to both. Poor tactics, poor players…

If this is so, then it won’t matter who or how many new defensive players we buy, unless we replace the lot… The entire defence. (And Jose, of course)! But I’m going by the opinions of some of our supporters. Because, I read that we need two new fullbacks. I read that Dier and Sanchez are liabilities, Toby is getting on and our backs ups need replacing too or loaning out. The only saving grace it seems, is that Lloris is suddenly a good goalkeeper once again. Whereas before lockdown he definitely needed replacing. According to wot I have read that is…. 😉

I find it so much easier to just support the players we actually have rather than rue the ones we don ‘t have…

I don’t actually care too much anymore about who is being touted for Spurs and the crap that is essentially made up in the media. Whoever comes, comes. Whoever goes, goodbye!… Meanwhile as always, whoever comes or goes, I support the one that is now a Spur and wish well the one that is to become an ex-Spur…..

Sanchez and Dier are Spurs players. Maguire, VVD, Ake are not. So, I support Eric and Sanchez. The rest of them mean sweet F all to me…

This is not a rant against others that do care about such things. Just me declaring my own thoughts… That is all folks!

Up the Spurs and all who play for her!

    Win, Lose or Draw…

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Not forgetting of course that we should probably replace Dele, Winks, Lamela, Lucas, Ndombele, Lo Celso, Fernandes and Sessegnon too. And, Harry is probably only around for 1 more season and Son might just get injured again, along with Harry… Oh, and if Hugo gets injured our back-up goalies are rubbish!

I’m just going by what I’ve heard, read. and even written myself… Oh and Jose will be gone by Christmas!

It’ll be easier just to support another team I think…. I’ll invent one. One that has all the players in it that Tottenham really should be buying over the next couple of Transfer Windows…

And I name this club; Spudtown City Rovers! SCR!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

If Arsenal win the FA Cup today, Spurs will have to play 3 EL qualifying matches to get through to the main competition. I think. Even after checking all the possible outcomes I’m still a bit confused. I mean if we win those 3 matches, do we then have to compete in a play-off match with another qualifier? I don’t know.

Anyway, if the Gooners do win today we play at least 3 extra EL matches than if Chelsea win. It would’ve have been 3, 2 legged matches but due to C-19 they have made it 3 single qualifying matches…

So, it’s not as bad as it might have been. 3 matches and not 6. However, these matches will be played whilst the new season is up and running. So we really could do with a Chelsea win today to ease our upcoming fixture list…

  • Geofspurs says:

HT …. Your comment (8:03) is why I avoid long discussions on players from other teams and also avoid being overly critical of our own players. What’s the point. As you say, they all make mistakes. It is the one and only thing that all footballers have in common.

It will make life easier for Spurs if Chelsea win tomorrow.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I know Geof… That was me thinking why on earth did I bother to write so much rubbish about the likes of Ake, when he is not even coming to Spurs anyway? But I do like the chat-chat with EJ. It’s just that I end up getting a headache, going around in circles. And, when just one simple post will do. 🙂

But, I will no doubt write a lot more than I actually need to, in the coming months…..

Apologies in advance to you all. Who’ll now be wishing for the deadly VS P-2 virus to return…

  • block 108 spurs says:

HT & Geof. Yes there are a lot of posts on VS over the years of a negative view point on players and manager, Levy, ENIC… While some may be correct (adebayor?) We as fans have had a good 5 years of spurs style football, a CL Final, Almost 20017 PL title… but no trophies.

So the critical views over 10 years are somewhere in-between, Levy building the Enfield Training ground, new WHL stadium, some bad purchases of players, some good, Modric VDV Hugo Jan /Toby Dele etc.

We have a new season 12 Sept. so lets get behind the THFC owners ,manager & players we have. Then we could see what we all want… new silverware in the trophy cabinet at WHL..COYS
