Match Thread – A Palace Of A Distraction But Spurs Have To Look To 2020/21

|

It’s been a strange old season and it’s been a strange calendar year for Tottenham Hotspur. The highs of the Champions League Final and then the lows of seeing our form and usual performance levels fall through the floor – but Crystal Palace this Sunday is a final chance for some joy before we tick quickly into the 2020/21 season.

What kind of performance we see from Jose Mourinho’s charges is absolutely anyone’s guess, but the first half showing against Leicester City certainly gave some cheer and fans would welcome more of that, but there is also the Europa League question to answer and it will go down to the final day’s results with us currently sat in seventh place in the table and a point behind Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Whatever Sunday may bring, the curtain on 2019/20 comes down and we all know we need to strengthen further in the summer, we need a decent pre-season and we need to hit next year running, otherwise fears that the wheels have truly fallen off the Spurs bus will grow.

We can’t allow all that progress and a nice and bright shiny new stadium to fall away as our Champions League hopes did this season. The only question is, will we?

Until then, Palace and all three points, please!

HT – the reason I discussed Ake in the last couple of days or so was because quite a few of us on here including myself thought he would be a good/great buy for us but I also stated a while back ago that I thought he’d be too expensive at around a minimum of £40m (something I said we could not afford to spend on 1 player this summer unfortunately and thus we would not be in for him even if we coveted him especially with Vert’s going for example – our 1 and only proper left footed CB, etc) and also that a top CL club would go in for him – Jod questioned me on this a couple of weeks ago (think it was on the Newcastle thread) and it has duely happened – top CL club and for £41m!

Jod – I agree Laporte is better than Ake but then again he already cost £57m 2.5 years ago (and he has had his chance to prove himself at Man City alongside a great in Kompany which would have made it easier) and that should be factored in also and I also agree Ake will not fill the boots of Kompany but I think he could be a better prospect than the likes of Stones and Otamendi – we will see – not that it matters much to us as we all rightly agree he is not our player but in a better time he could have been indeed we have paid £42m for a defender before in Davy so it would not be beyond the realms of possibility to do so again although not at the moment of course!

By the way HT – you stated yesterday we had recently been a top 4 and a CL final club, etc – so what’s wrong with comparing our players to similar one’s at other clubs who are of the same ilk?! It’s all part and parcel of discussion surely especially recent and current one at that. I might add that at the highest level as we have been trying to fight recently – mistakes are all that much more pronounced and much more costly – that’s just the way it is and I think if we want to reach those height’s again we have to highlight how our players are doing and compare them to the other’s as mentioned (of club’s of similar ilk, etc)! Sure all players can make a mistake but with what frequency, etc is the most important thing – unfortunately for us Serge and Davy have made them all too often up until now and costly one’s at that – hence why I bring them up and other’s do also – it holds us back regularly especially with regards to Serge!

I find it a relevant and interesting discussion myself hence why I write lol!

I did just say that I enjoy our chit-chats, EJ…

I was referring to my own need to keep writing stuff and then repeating it, as giving myself a headache. It’s why I also wrote that I wasn’t ranting against anyone else… I wasn’t even ranting. Just talking a bit of silliness. Just a bit of harmless fun…. So, don’t worry about me and what I say. Write on, Baby!

  • El Jefe says:

HT – I also tend to enjoy our discussion’s lol – cheers – it makes life as a Spur and a football fan in general all that much more interesting…….!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

And, it was just a general observation about what I read on here, on the forum and elsewhere from Spurs supporters all over, about virtually our entire squad not being that good. And recently it’s not even about many supporters writing about the 3 or 4 players that they don’t rate. I’ve read just from individuals as well, that have said in all seriousness that we have only 3 decent players!

I like our payers! They just need to start playing some decent football again. I think they can and I think they will…

  • El Jefe says:

HT – just seen your 10.21am post – LOL – like I just wrote before seeing your last post – I also enjoy our chit-chats aswell lol!

Anyway will have to support Chelski today unfortunately – lesser of 2 evil’s possibly and also in our interests lol!
Saying that watch Arsenal cause another upset at least for us anyway – you know it’s the way – when do Spur’s ever get it the easy way or what they want/need lol?!

  • El Jefe says:

Interesting to hear that Foyth is keen to stay and fight for a place – 1 question that springs to mind immediately is where that would be?!

Surely not at CB (I will continue to say that he is too short at 5ft10 to be a top Prem CB and is surely currently behind all of Toby, Davy, Dier and Tanganga anyway) so it would have to at RB but for the time being Serge is 1st choice and even Tanganga could cover there if necessary and that’s all before any signings of any defender’s this summer which could still most certainly happen!

  • El Jefe says:

Hoj apparently very keen on joining us and so far resisting all other offers – hope he ends up being worth it if he does indeed join in the end – we could do with a decent DMC to replace the likes of Wanyama/Dier there finally!

Assuming Levy will try to milk the stance as much as possible (nothing necessarily wrong with this of course – standard business practise) – just hope it doesn’t cost JM his transfer if that’s who he really wants for that position.

Dier could still always pop up there also – he is indeed still a member of the squad after all having recently signed a new contract lol!

Wonder where KWP will fit into all of this also?!

Think he’s likely to leave – would be amazing if we could somehow pull off a straight swap as we value KWP apparently at upto £15m – the same it is said we are willing to offer for Hoj at the moment! Doubt it will be this simple in the end lol but would be great for the coffers if it was something like this kind of deal!

  • PompeyYid says:

HT & EJ…your debate regards CB’s very good, but sorry EJ am with HT on this one.

HT…Hindsight what a wonderful word, the discussion regards our players v theirs, other teams, as Geofspurs said is pointless, it is a round n round we go in circles, happens every single year/season, I know it is about opinions and that is what makes VS great and fun at times.

B108 said a new season is about to start, well 12th Sept, lets all try and get behind everyone/thing that is Tottenham Hotspur, or are some afraid to be positive for fear of being wrong, it happens that’s life.

Ht…just read your last post, so true, we only have 3 decent players lol! I must be another odd one out but I like all our players, one way or another, yes I get disappointed sometimes with them but other times I am over the moon with them, nobody/nothing is perfect, and as yourself I think they can and will…COYS

  • El Jefe says:

No worries PY – I’ll let you off this time lol!

    • PompeyYid says:

Haha EJ, thanks, mind I am 6ft 2ins CB/CH, and played CB or CH, who could use his feet. COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

EJ…..you seem to rate Ake highly as a CB despite being only 5ft 11″ but believe Foyth is too short at 5ft 10″, does 1″ make that much difference? Well in this instance anyway! 🙂

Actually, I’ve been checking his vitals and the details I found gave his height as 1.87m which converts to 6ft 1 1/2″ which, if correct, is 2 1/2″ taller than Ake and a decent height for a CB.

  • PompeyYid says:

Sorry about that, repeating myself, need to read over what I write before submitting, need to read over what I write before submitting, lol! COYS

  • El Jefe says:

PY – LOL – parrott, parrott lol!

TQ – so do Man City and Pep lol – otherwise why would they buy him?! Also he has proven himself in the Prem at Bournemouth these last 3 years – something Foyth has yet to do with us but I would like to see Foyth stay and succeed for sure (I stated this in the last week) but he might have to do it at RB (as he has been playing regularly for Argentina lately) because we already have 4 options for RCB as it is ultimately (Toby, Davy and even Dier and Tanganga)!

I’ll be much happier if he is indeed 6ft1+ lol – decent height for a CB these days agreed and a great height for a RB for sure – not many around that are that kind of height – although I’ve read Castagne (who I’d be interested in as a new RB) is 6ft1 and Davies is 5ft11 – great addition/option to have height at full-back also – especially as a lot of the time they are last line of defence against deep crosses to the far post, etc!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

EJ….tallish full backs suit Jose’s tactics as well he likes to get one full back to play further forward while the other drops in to make a back three

  • El Jefe says:

Indeed TQ – great spot there by yourself as usual – wouldn’t expect any less from you though lol – I’ve also read he has doubts about Aarons given he’s 5ft10 but to be honest I thought 5ft10 was not too bad for a full-back indeed Sessegnon is 5ft10 for example and his beloved Ashley Cole lol was 5ft9! Serge is also 5ft9 so I’m not that sure as regards the report I read on Aarons but anyway given how JM is with his defensive system when attacking as described by you and likes to be solid defensively anyway – height is a great added option at full-back for sure ofr him. In Davies at 5ft11 I think he’s happy and the same if he brings in Castagne at 6ft1 or plays the likes of Tanganga 6ft or even Foyth (at supposedly 6ft1+ now lol) so we should be better equipped to deal with high balls to the wings (which have recently become a regular occurence especially to our RB position – with Serge regularly playing there) and also deep crosses in general also!

Anyway off to watch the FA Cup final – cheering Chelski on – is that even allowed LOL?!

  • block 108 spurs says:

FA Cup.. Both teams shape is 343… jose does that…

    Come on Chelsea…

  • block 108 spurs says:

Only 6 mins chelsea goal… arsenal defense terrible…lol

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Both Chelsea and Arsenal with young managers are playing with a plan, a little flawed in places but they are both developing a style of play. What is Spurs style under Jose. So far all I can see is pack the defence, hope for something on the counter attack and if no counter attack is available, pump long balls up to Kane. Jose will be found out big time next season, I am absolutely convinced of that. He’ll be gone by Christmas

  • El Jefe says:

Thanks for fcuking nothing Chelski – typical but I did pretty much call it on here this morning already so should not be surprised really!

Aubameyang is way too good for the Scum – world class like HK10 so they’ve always got a chance and on top he’s very fast still (Arse resorting to old faithful but I guess it’s worked lol) – hope he bloody leaves – good riddance lol!

  • wentworth says:

Tend to agree with Doncatster. When the crowds return, they will not stand for the boring, defensive play and 30 % possession. Spurs crowds are notorious for their impatience and can be highly critical. We have always played with style and passion with top midfielders and great passers. At the moment we rely on the power and talent of Kane and the occasional inspiration from Son. We have to be honest. Other than that, there is little to shout about. If N’Dombele comes good we could add some skill. However, our midfield is very weak with no goalscorers, free kick takers or power shots from a distance. Defence is OK but quality full backs would enhance our attacking play. So we need a creative midfielder who can score, shoot, take decent free kicks and boss the midfield. Then that elusive striker after many many years to give Kane a break or support. Even 3 decent signings could move us forward. Watch out for the cheapies from Levy.
