Five Football League stars Spurs should target in the Summer

|

We all know Daniel Levy loves a bargain, and Spurs have a great history of signing young players from the lower leagues of English football before developing them into superstars.

The likes of Danny Rose, Kyle Walker, Aaron Lennon, Michael Dawson, Dele Alli and now Joe Rodon have all come from teams in the Championship or division below and have all made plenty of first team contributions – except Rodon who is only just beginning to.

With several first team players linked with moves away and Gareth Bale not looking like he will be returning to the club, the English Football Leagues could be a source that Spurs turn to for talent, and there is a wealth of young talent that Spurs could sign.

Here is our top 5 young players that Spurs should sign who we believe could eventually become first team players:

Michael Olise – Reading

Nineteen-year-old midfielder Michael Olise has been linked with a move to Spurs for some time now largely due to his incredible performances in the Championship with Reading.

Scoring five goals and assisting 10 in 36 appearances, Olise has been the talk of the town for over a year now due to his ability to play his way out of trouble, direct dribbling and ability to glide past players with ease.

In many ways, Olise is a similar type of player to Tanguy Ndombele, but with the skills of Adel Taarabt – both players have fantastic skills in their locker but Taarabt is one step above in that department, while Olise is almost on par with the Moroccan.

Signing the Reading man would be a shrewd piece of business as he has a release clause of just £8 million, despite being valued at far more than that.

Ricky-Jade Jones – Peterborough United

Rapid forward and FIFA and Football Manager cult-hero Ricky-Jade Jones makes this list despite failing to score for Peterborough in the league thus far in his career.

Jones is incredibly quick and can also play on the left as an inside forward, and has already had Manchester United and Liverpool interested in his services, while Spurs have reportedly already scouted the youngster.

With Jonson Clarke-Harris having a fantastic season at the Posh, it is likely that the League One club will be willing to cash in to avoid the youngster’s development being stunted and ultimately, his value falling.

Should Jones’ development continue though, he could make a more than capable back-up option for Harry Kane up front, or Son Heung-min on the left or potentially even successor to one of those two should one of them depart.

Joao Pedro – Watford

Probably the most expensive option on this list, 19-year-old Joao Pedro has well and truly made his mark at Watford.

After scoring the winner against rivals Luton Town earlier in the season, the Brazilian has gone on to score eight more goals this season, but despite the low tally, he has shown plenty of promise in the final third and if he stays at the club next season, there is no doubt he will be a contender for top goalscorer in the Championship – providing Watford don’t win promotion.

There have been little rumours of a move away from the Hertfordshire club, and after signing for £18 million from Fluminense last season, it’s unlikely that he will be available for any less – but he could prove to be an alternative option to Carlos Vinicius but one with far more potential.

Ben Cabango – Swansea City

Could Spurs swoop for another young Welsh defender from Swansea after previously raiding them for Ben Davies and Joe Rodon?

Ben Cabango is another young centre-back who has made a big impression in Wales, becoming apart of the national team setup as well as scoring four goals and setting one goal up in 27 Championship appearances – an impressive stat-line for a defender in just his second full season at the club as a regular.

Should he join, it’s likely Swansea will want a fee above the region of £20 million after he recently signed a new long-term contract, and the 20-year-old could form a formidable partnership at the back with his former teammate Rodon – something which Spurs fans would definitely look forward to seeing.

Junior Tchamadeu – Colchester

Seventeen-year-old right-back Junior Tchamadeu became Colchester United’s youngest ever starting debutant on the 5th of December last year as his club beat Grimsby Town 2-1 when he was just 16 years and 349 days old.

Tchamadeu has an incredible amount of potential, and to become a first team regular at a Football League club before turning 18 is a huge feat and indicator that he is well on course to reach the heights that the Colchester staff believe he can.

The youngster is an attack-minded wing-back who loves to bomb up and down the right flank, getting crosses in up at one end and making tackles at the other – qualities Spurs are desperate for from their full-backs and with Matt Doherty and Serge Aurier underwhelming fans, Tchamadeu would be a perfect signing for the future.
