Explained: Why Tottenham won’t sell Christian Eriksen in January despite reports

|

Adrian Kajumba of the Daily Mail believes Tottenham are open to offers for Christian Eriksen in January, but it’s hard to see the 27-year-old leaving midway through the season. Eriksen is out of contract next summer and won’t command much of a transfer fee as he can sign a pre-contract deal with an overseas club.

The Daily Mail say Bruno Fernandes could be on his way to North London as a potential replacement for the Danish international, but are Tottenham really going to meet his £65m asking price? Signing a striker is a much more pertinent issue, as Mauricio Pochettino needs cover for Harry Kane following the departures of Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente.

Eriksen has admitted wanting out at Tottenham and being keen on joining Real Madrid, so time will tell if Los Blancos offer a contract in the coming weeks. If the 27-year-old agreed a deal with Real, Eriksen would make the switch to the Santiago Bernabeu in July, meaning Tottenham would retain his services for the remainder of the campaign.

It’s not an ideal situation, but Daniel Levy has been put into an unwinnable situation after failing to cash in on Eriksen over the summer.
