Explained: Why Celtic might struggle to re-sign Victor Wanyama, bad news for Tottenham

|

Celtic have been linked with Victor Wanyama, but his wage demands might prove too steep for the Scottish Premiership side to match. It’s potentially bad news for Tottenham as they’re desperate to sell the 28-year-old after his failed move to Club Brugge over the summer.

Wanyama is surplus to requirements in North London after falling down the pecking order. The Kenyan international finds himself behind Tanguy Ndombele, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks and Eric Dier, and has been made available for sale in January.

Wanyama earns £65k-per-week/£3.38m-a-year at Tottenham which is 400% more than Celtic’s average wage, according to Global Sports Salaries. He’s struggled with injuries and a lack of playing time in the last 12 months, however, which may also put the Hoops off.

The defensive-midfielder racked up 838 minutes of Premier League football in 2017/18, 509 minutes in 2018/19 and 23 minutes so far this season. Wanyama has two years remaining on his contract at Tottenham, but he’s unlikely to last until 2021 after falling out of favour.

Whether the 28-year-old wants to return to Scotland remains to be seen, however. He turned down Brugge as he felt they were beneath him, so will he jump at a return to Celtic while in his prime years?
