Report: Midfielder could leave Tottenham in January, Pochettino wanted him gone in August

|

Victor Wanyama nearly left Tottenham over the summer before turning down a move to Club Brugge, but Wayne Veysey of the Football Insider says the 28-year-old could be offloaded in January.

Mauricio Pochettino is desperate to clear the squad of players who won’t be at Tottenham for the long-term and wants Daniel Levy to ship Wanyama if a replacement can be located.

The Kenyan international has made 95 appearances in all competitions since joining Spurs from Southampton in 2016, but he’s been on the periphery over the last two years.

Injuries led to a lack of playing time which hampered his form, and Tottenham have since upgraded their options in midfield with Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso. Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks are ahead of Wanyama in the pecking order too.

Pochettino was happy to let him leave in August and is expected to try again when the winter transfer window opens. The 28-year-old has only made two appearances this season and his performances have left a lot to be desired.

Whether Wanyama is open to leaving remains to be seen, however, as he already cost Tottenham £9m and drew the ire of Levy by snubbing Brugge. Time will tell.
