Report: Mauricio Pochettino aims to ‘freshen up squad’ by selling 28-year-old Tottenham man

|

According to Gary Jacob of The Times, Mauricio Pochettino is aiming to ‘freshen up the squad’ by selling Victor Wanyama among others in January.

The 28-year-old was expected to leave Tottenham over the summer but rejected a move to Club Brugge. Pochettino then brought Wanyama back into the fold but results have left a lot to be desired.

Spurs are currently ninth in the Premier League and 13 points adrift of leaders Liverpool after eight games, they’ve been knocked out of the EFL Cup to Colchester United, and have only picked up one point from their first two Champions League group games.

Pochettino’s side could be ruled out of three competitions already this season which is why drastic steps may be taken to turn things around. The Times say Wanyama is on a list of unwanted players that will be offloaded in January.

The Kenyan international returned to the first-team in September and made three appearances before October. Wanyama has since found himself omitted from the matchday squad, however, being left out against Bayern Munich (October 1) and Brighton (October 5).

He’s behind Tanguy Ndombele, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks and Eric Dier in the pecking order and is clearly surplus to requirements. Spurs will be hoping he doesn’t turn another suitor down.
