Opinion: Tottenham’s £65,000 p/w man simply must make a January move

|

Tottenham supporters are all well aware of the fact that change simply has to happen, and very, very fast for that matter. The Lilywhites are in a position of transition and will have to turn things around, starting with the current squad which is in great need of a lift.

With that in mind, it must be said that Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy seem desperate to make that happen. Over the summer, The Daily Mail reported that Danny Rose headed up an eight-man list that were allowed to move from Spurs, yet only four of those made permanent moves away.

Again, though, the club are having similar stories put out about the squad, and as January fast approaches the supporters have been given another list of potential outs, this time from The Times, which contains five players, one of which is Victor Wanyama.

Of all of the Lilywhites, the man who has the least value at Tottenham given the current situation is Wanyama. This feels extremely harsh to say given the impact and ability he showed in his first couple of seasons after signing from Southampton, but the Kenyan’s injuries have taken their toll.

It seems crazy that at the age of just 28-years-old Wanyama is in this category of players who have very little left to give in North London, but whenever he’s played he’s been a calamity, and with a willing buyer surfacing in the form of Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, allowing him to leave is crucial.

Not only would allowing Wanyama leave save a spot in the squad for Tottenham to bring in a better option, but it would also save a whopping £65,000 per week from their wage bill, as per Spotrac, and that is not money that can be slept on considering Wanyama’s lack of an impact at the moment.
