Explained: The only option Tottenham have left with Christian Eriksen

|

Christian Eriksen could be on his way out of Tottenham next summer with his contract expiring in June. The 27-year-old is no closer to putting pen to paper on a new deal and could leave on a free transfer unless he’s either sold or tied down to an extension. As Eriksen could sign a pre-contract deal with overseas clubs in January, Spurs are running out of options.

Arsenal were in a similar predicament with Alexis Sanchez in January 2018 and managed to agree a swap-deal for Manchester United’s Henrik Mkhitaryan rather than lose him for nothing the following summer. This could be the only way Tottenham get something for Eriksen, as it’s hard to see clubs putting up money when they could sign him for free months later.

The Danish international has longed for a move to Real Madrid, so Spurs might have to weigh up what player they could get in return for the forward when the winter transfer window opens. Isco has an uncertain future and is playing in a position that Eden Hazard will surely take up when he returns from injury. Whether he’s open to a move to Tottenham remains to be seen, however.

Gareth Bale is another player who could be moved on, but his lofty wages could be too steep for Spurs. Time will tell. Daniel Levy wanted £62.8m for Eriksen over the summer but may now have to settle for a swap-deal instead.
