Spurs Word On The Tweet

“Can’t Defend” “Imagine The…” – Spurs Defeat Means It’s This Man’s Time For Stick

|

Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat to Liverpool at the weekend certainly left fans frustrated as we again failed to get ourselves going, much like the Watford defeat, and it’s definitely re-sparked some existing concerns amongst the fan base.

A rest for Harry Kane, our failure to strengthen the pack over the summer given the number of players on international duty until late on in the summer and so on.

We were clearly outplayed but equally could’ve nicked a point at the end, if the referee knew his job but the meltdown from some in the fan base is understandable.

On what I think everyone will accept was a bad day though, I’m not entirely sure Kieran Trippier should’ve been the focus of the above-listed tweets as for me he’s come on leaps and bounds in more recent times and when a player does that, it means a bad day is around the corner and when that happens to a goalkeeper or a defender it stands out far more than it otherwise would as mistakes can be more easily picked up on.

The 27-year-old is known for being better driving forward than he is at straight defending, but that’s not exactly new for fullbacks in the modern game, but I think this criticism is unfair. If a defender doesn’t have a ball out available, they will lose possession quickly – the alternative is hoof ball and they get maligned for that as well.

With calls for Aurier and a stronger defensive mind, my own Devil’s Advocate voice says give it six months and the same fans would be moaning he doesn’t attack like Trippier and Poch is picking the wrong man.
