“A Lot Was Said” – Player Attempts To Set The Record Straight & Spurs Fans Should Be Pleased

|

Plenty of Tottenham Hotspur fans were excited when news broke over the weekend of our potential interest in PSV Eindhoven attacker Steven Bergwijn and the suggestion that a deal would be quickly finalised this week.

Given the 22-year-old Dutch international’s career so far and the promise that undoubtedly lies ahead for his development, the interest in the reported £30million deal was obvious but the one sour point coming out in the media concerned his apparent refusal to play for PSV once we’d made contact.

He did miss their last game and it was known that the player was heading to England for talks and a medical, but with the rumours of his mini-strike being aired, the player himself took to Instagram this week to set the record straight.

“Good evening PSV fans, a lot was said about me, I’ve read all of it and I’m disappointed with how this went down. None of it is true, I never refused to play for PSV and I would never do so in the future. I’m a boy from the club, PSV is in my heart. The media is twisting this whole story, I called the coach this morning and said some things are going on and he gave his permission. He then wished me success, everything went fine and I did everything in a good manner without going behind PSV’s back. Thank you.”

Whilst it’s probably not a massive thing in the modern game, from an attitude point of view, the fact he didn’t go against his club here to force or engineer a move, I welcome as good news. Given our performances in 2019 imply that our spirit of former years has taken a hit, the last thing we want to do is bolster the group with the wrong kind of attitude and mentality and given all the rumours and claims that often go unanswered in the world of the media, it’s nice to see a player taking a stand as well.

Bergwijn...
