Spurs Get A Replay They Didn’t Want But More Positives Should Please – Match Stats

|

After tasting Premier League disappointment at the hands of Southampton at the turn of the New Year, manager Jose Mourinho and his first team squad had an opportunity for revenge earlier today as we made the trip to St Mary’s Stadium for our FA Cup fourth round clash.

There was some hope, or expectation, that Southampton would rotate their pack and focus on keeping their top flight run going of late, but there weren’t many changes, and I’d imagine most fans saw us rotate in the way they imagined with starts for Davison Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga – otherwise we were pretty strong.

It was hardly a classic, but plenty will point to further small improvements in our play, in particular, Giovani Lo Celso’s continued improvement as he settles in more at the club, but despite taking the lead just ahead of the half hour mark (Son Heung-Min), Southampton got a late but largely deserved leveller in the 87th minute to take us back home for a replay.

With Danny Ings having an off day, some will argue Southampton maybe deserved more, others will think had we had a proper striker on the pitch, things may have been different.
