Tottenham’s 2021/22 Expectations – What Are They

|

So we are on the brink of a new season, one that could well determine the future of Tottenham Hotspur for the next decade. Normally this is the time for extreme feelings of optimism, despair, hope, fear, etc, to run riot in the minds of every supporter of every club. But for our club, this is not a normal time.

We all know the many issues that confront Spurs this season. The requirements to improve declining team performances have been discussed to infinity and back on VS. Given what we all know it is now time to bite the bullet and convey our expectations for the season.

For the past few seasons, there has been a consensus from most supporters on VS that we needed to remain in the top six and have decent runs in the various cups where the chance of silverware was considered possible. European football was a major focus. The expectations are likely to be rather different this season, despairingly so.

The cynics among us will probably hope that we achieve a top seventeen place in the league and hopefully reach the third round of the FA Cup (!!). They will also hope that we don’t use more than four new managers as the season progresses. That does seem to be quite achievable so ‘good on ya’ cynics.

The optimists among us will probably still be hoping for a top six finish in the league and a decent run in one or more of the cups so it’s another ‘thumbs up’ to the optimists.

Which of the above pathways each supporter dares to tread will depend on all the things that remain up in the air at the club, all the issues highlighted in lengthy and repetitive discussion on VS. Of course it’s difficult, actually, it’s impossible, to make any educated predictions when nobody quite knows what the team will look like when it steps on the park to face Manchester City. But it is what it is and when it comes to football most of our ideas are based on uneducated guesses at the best of times.

The truth is that all results, from winning the double to relegation, are possible. So I’ll start the ball rolling with my expectations for the season ahead.

I had to pause my writing here as I entered a few moments of deep and profound thought.

Those moments proved quite fruitless. I don’t seem to have any expectations, good or bad. I simply can’t find any base to sit an expectation on.

I’ll just have to resort to the tried and tested default expectation which has more to do with hope, than anything sensible or meaningful. Therefore, a top six finish in the league and a decent run in at least one of the cups!

Who knows?

Hey Geof, hows it going down under?

Me am expecting Spurs to finish a min of 6th in the Prem and win that Euro Cup think, possibly beating Roma in the final, that would be a lark eh! COYS

Hi Geof…you must be enjoying the olympic football! :- )

I don’t have any great expectation for the upcoming season, there is going to be so much work to do as a result of the rebuild…that is if we actually manage to achieve one. The situation with Kane worries me, if he is to go we should make a take it or leave it offer to City by saying £xxxm but it has to be done within one week with Kane not starting in the opening PL game for them. I doubt he would anyway due to his extended holiday. That way we get the money in good time to do some serious business in the market before we are left with the bargain bucket at the end of the window.

Ooops…….Geof, I was referring to the Aussie win over GB but just seen that they lost to Sweden in the semi’s today!

Hello TQ, Pompey, Danny and G down under. Top 6 for sure, but hopefully in contention for fourth.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

    Hi LT….that’s what I like….a bit of optimism! 🙂

I don’t know how I feel about the situation with Lane other than a sincere hope that he goes abroad should he go at all.

    Hi folks
New thread, I live on hope more than expectations for this season.
It really depends on who comes in and who leaves.
I’m sort of hoping for somewhere between 4th and 6th this season may be a trophy, unlike PY (hi chum)
I have no great interest in the Euro conference cup (thingy) for me this could be a draw back, the only benefit could be to give some fringe players a bit of game time, other wise it could be a drain on resources and could lead to game pile ups and injuries in the latter part of the season for no real end product.
But we are in such a flux atm, is Kane staying or going, who is his replacement, do we get two to replace him, we haven’t even sorted out our defence needs yet never mind (WW’s) much needed midfield playmaker, I’m certainly not very encouraged that we will win our fist couple of games.
    But live in hope.

  • Love totty says:

We have some very good players TQ, surely Nuno can get a team together that can pass the ball to each other.

  • 123spurs says:

Top4 and a cup as always

  • Niall D says:

Hi Geoff good to see you back, yes LT managed the heat OK m8. 😉👍

Looks as though Kane is going, going gone if today’s news is correct. No comments from club or Kane to deny his absence. Hope it doesn’t leave a bad taste in the mouth.

Unless we make some serious signings I cannot see us getting top six. Defence is currently well below par. Romero should make a difference. Will Bryan Gil turn out to be a star or flop.

However, it’s the midfield general we are really lacking. Lo Celso was a mistake… 15 starts, no goals and 2 assists and lots of falling over/ injuries. Just not good enough. N’Dombele is great to the eye but a bit of a maverick. Dele is on his way back (hopefully) but we have to solve that driving midfield, goalscoring, top passing midfielder.

What about a striker? Kane was our own. We have made some abysmal signings in the past. Also we need two decent wing backs.

Hopefully a big clearout (7,8,or even 9)in the coming days will provide some funds. But can we trust Levy to purchase the best instead of unknown, bargain basements?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

It would be so out of character for Kane to refuse to train, it would also affect his standing and integrity as England captain. If indeed this is the situation I can’t help feel that he might have been encouraged by city’s hierachy who would probably have indicated that they would cover any fines imposed by the club and be compensated for any other losses.

  • 123spurs says:

Just name the price for city @ 150 mill plus, take it or leave it. Def if unproven grealish is going for 100mil.

  • 123spurs says:

Again if kane wants to leave, let the humiliation of asking for a transfer request. Or else rot in the reserves until his contract runs out. Time for owners to teach players a lesson.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I thought we might see a change of transfer strategy with the appontment of a new recruitment team but it seems nothing has changed, we still turn the pursuit of many of our targets into endless sagas.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

We should just demand £100m plus Bernado Silva then go and get Vlahovic.

  • 123spurs says:

Exactly TQ same ol shite, just a different person in the seat. I compare it to driving the bus down the bumpy road. As I said before now is the time for a detour. And lose this culture, mentality, attitude we have.

    • 62rovinella says:

I’m more praying than hoping…..too much to be done and moving too slow as usual…same dumb reports everyday….spurs are close….boring….coys

  • 62rovinella says:

Just to say I think city have automatically set the price for Kane by bidding 100m for grealish… nothing less than 150m….or 100m and a player of our choice

  • Geofspurs says:

ND …. Iagree. Not sure what good the Conference cup will be …. especially as we will be gallivanting all over Europe trying to dodge Covid19.
