Tottenham man could miss Chelsea clash on Thursday despite returning to training

|

Tottenham confirmed on Friday that Victor Wanyama had returned to training after a lengthy knee injury, but the Guardian believe he will miss out on Thursday’s EFL Cup clash with Chelsea. Spurs have a 1-0 aggregate lead from the first-leg of their semi-final meeting, but their injury crisis could see Chelsea capitalise at Stamford Bridge.

Wanyama has endured a stop-start season for Tottenham, having amassed only 358 minutes of football in all competitions, and his future at the club is uncertain too. The general consensus is that Wanyama’s overall lack of playing time may have hampered his performance levels, so he’s no longer of the standard to be at Tottenham.

Despite this, Mauricio Pochettino is desperate for the 27-year-old due to a dearth of fit and available midfielders. Dele Alli was recently ruled out until March, Moussa Sissoko remains sidelined with a groin injury and Mousa Dembele was sold to Guangzhou R&F.

Tottenham have Eric Dier who recently returned from appendicitis, Harry Winks and Christian Eriksen available to play in midfield against Chelsea. Wanyama will be building up his fitness and training and should be the next player to return for Spurs after Lucas Moura.
