Tottenham ‘could sell’ Danny Rose this summer

|

According to Owen Fulda of the Daily Star, Tottenham ‘could sell’ Danny Rose this summer to generate funds for new arrivals. The 30-year-old has an uncertain future after falling down the pecking order last season. Rose’s deal has one year remaining too, so Daniel Levy will want to cash in rather than risk losing him for nothing.

What happened in 2019/20?

Decline. Rose’s form spiralled and he ended up losing his place to Ben Davies. The 30-year-old was an underperforming regular under Mauricio Pochettino (9/12 Premier League appearances) and was finally dropped the minute Jose Mourinho came in (3/12 Premier League appearances) on November 20.

In a bid for more playing time, Rose was loaned out to Newcastle United in January and went on to make 13/16 appearances in all competitions (1030/1440 minutes). He played in 81% of the Magpies’ games and 71.5% of the available minutes, enhancing his reputation with return to form, but it hasn’t changed opinion back in North London.

Rose told Football.London that he would like to see out the last year of his contract at Tottenham, the Daily Star’s report suggests he won’t be given the chance – Ben Davies is first-choice at left-back and Ryan Sessegnon could soon be promoted to second-choice.

How much could we generate through Rose’s sale?

When Rose told The Sun in 2017 that he wanted out of Tottenham amid Manchester United interest, the Daily Mail reported that his asking price was £50m. Shields Gazette said in July that he’s only worth £5m now.

As per Spotrac, the England international earns £60k-per-week/£3.12m-a-year, so his sale could raise more than £8m in total. The Covid-19 pandemic caused our revenue to drop significantly, so Daniel Levy took out a loan to ease the pressure.

The Daily Star say a number of player sales will also be sanctioned to bring money back in, so Rose could be one of many shown the exit door this summer.

Summary

This news won’t surprise many supporters. Rose hasn’t been at his best in a Tottenham shirt for some time and it’s not worth us extending his deal, so selling while he still has value makes sense.

It may be time–or even past time–for Spurs and Danny to part ways, but I’ll always hold him in warm regard after his first match vs. the Arse when he smoked them for one heck of a goal. Be well, Danny Rose. You’ll always be in our hearts. I’d ask you to take José with you, but I wouldn’t wish that on someone for whom I hole warm feelings.
