Tottenham ‘could sell’ another defender ‘to fund’ transfer activity

|

According to Owen Fulda of the Daily Star, Tottenham ‘could sell’ Juan Foyth ‘to fund’ their transfer activity this summer. The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a big dip in revenue, so we’re having to ship the deadwood and reinvest that money for new arrivals.

What went wrong for Foyth?

This season? Injuries. The 22-year-old was earmarked by Mauricio Pochettino to replace Kieran Trippier at right-back, but he suffered an ankle injury in pre-season that kept him out until October. By the time Foyth returned, Serge Aurier relegated him to a place on the bench after nailing down a starting place at right-back.

The Argentine international went on to make only seven appearances in all competitions, amassing a paltry 262 minutes of football. Foyth started just one Premier League game last season (2-2 vs Norwich City on December 28, 2019) and didn’t feature at all in 2020.

How much could we make from selling him?

The Daily Star have quoted Foyth’s Transfermarkt value of £12.15m, but Football Insider said his asking price was £8m in May while The Sun said he’d cost £15m earlier in August. With Tottenham paying £8m for the centre-back in 2017, they may be open to offers that are double figures.

As per Spotrac, Foyth earns £21.5k-per-week/£1.12m-a-year for a contract ending in 2022, so his sale could generate £2.24m from the wages alone.

Where may Foyth end up?

The Daily Star say Leeds United are interested in the 22-year-old, but El Dia said in June that Barcelona are monitoring the situation too. Foyth will have to take a step down from Tottenham to get more playing time next season, but he should still have suitors in the Premier League.

When fit, Foyth was still making our matchday squad, so there’s no reason why he can’t attract a top-flight club if sold. There’s plenty of potential suitors out there – Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings has been linked with a move away, West Bromwich Albion, West Ham United are after Shane Duffy, Brighton & Hove Albion could lose Ben White to Leeds United, Everton are desperate to strengthen at the back and Southampton also want a defender this summer.

Summary

It would be sad to see Foyth leave after the promise he showed in the past, but dwindling finances are forcing us to make difficult decisions. Foyth is more expendable – 8/52 appearances in 2017/18, 17/58 appearances in 2018/19, 7/45 appearances in 2019/20 – than other defenders and could generate a lot of money, so the benefits from selling him are obvious.
