Tottenham battle for £7m bargain stalwart who tackles more than Alderweireld – Report

|

According to a report from the Daily Express, Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho plans to battle Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte over Nerazzurri defender Diego Godin – with his apparent cut price of £7 million looking like a bargain.

Godin, who has accumulated a plethora of accolades throughout his eventful career, including two Champions League finals with Atletico Madrid and representing Uruguay at three World Cups over the last decade, is now on Spurs’ radar despite the fact he could be approaching the twilight years of his playing days at age 34.

This Express report has revealed that Mourinho is willing to enter a ‘tug-of-war’ with Inter boss Conte over the player’s signature, with the Italian ex-Chelsea boss wanting to keep Godin on the books despite barely using him this campaign.

According to WhoScored, Godin has started just 12 Serie A games this season, all the while managing an 84.7% pass accuracy and 1.5 tackles per game.

Should Tottenham swoop for Godin?

Yes

No

The Uruguayan has also managed more challenges on average this season than Tottenham mainstay Toby Alderweireld whilst making more interceptions than the entirety of our squad bar Japhet Tanganga.

Despite his fairly advanced age, potentially drawing near to his sell-by date, the fact he could be available for just £7 million may be enough incentive to warrant Mourinho’s interest in signing the South American veteran.

Indeed, the Portuguese boss is apparently looking for a cheap option that can reassure his defence next campaign, but he may face road blocks from Conte who wants to keep the player and Manchester United who are also said to be harbouring an interest.

This could be a smart swoop from our perspective given his price tag and his vast experience playing on some of the biggest stages in world football.

Kind of hoping we can land the likes of Meunier, Willian and Lallana on free transfers this summer, these are all hugely talented players who could improve the Tottenham squad significantly. Godin is perhaps a little to old to plan forward.
