“The club should’ve trusted me” – Ex-Spurs favourite reveals Pochettino heartache

|

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Athletic, ex-Spurs midfielder Victor Wanyama has expressed his heartache over the club’s apparent lack of support through a long-term knee injury – going on to say that we should’ve trusted him.

Wanyama, who signed for MLS side Montreal Impact in March on a free transfer, bringing an end to his near-four year stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, has now opened up to the Athletic over his time in north London – citing particular disappointment over our club’s supposed reaction to his injury troubles.

Ever since suffering a knee cartilage injury during the 2017/2018 pre-season tour, it’s arguable that Wanyama hasn’t been the same since – with one source close to the Athletic even stating that the ‘Lion in victor has gone’.

Now, baring all in an interview, Wanyama has taken a swipe at former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino and his assistant coach Jesus Perez – with the Kenyan international explaining that he went to our ex-coach’s office to speak with him, potentially about more game time, but he was busy.

Should Spurs have sold Wanyama?

Yes

No

Perez apparently told Wanyama to be patient and that his chance would come but it seemingly never did, looking back, the MLS midfielder has revealed that this was the reason he left for Canada.

The 28-year-old made just two substitute appearances totalling 24 minutes of action during his last half-campaign for us but did manage 97 outings in total for the club since signing in 2016.

All in all, most supporters will probably remember Wanyama for his noteworthy role in helping us reach the 2019 Champions League final, with a handful of fans utterly bemused to see him leave for free after such a great start to his Spurs career.

Evidently, he was seen as a favourite who couldn’t quite recover from injury setbacks by these supporters – but letting him go was arguably the selfless choice.
