Statistical Preview: Spurs vs Villa

|

Tottenham Hotspur commence 2023 this coming Sunday with a home fixture against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, with kick-off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium being 2 PM BST and the match being televised live on Sky Sports.

You can read excerpts from Antonio Conte’s pre-match press conference here, the match preview here, and the Spurs team news here.

Below is the pick of the stats from this fixture ahead of Sunday afternoon’s showdown:

  • Spurs have won 12 of the last 14 Premiership encounters between the two sides, although Villa won at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in May 2021 (a 2-1 victory).
  • Indeed, Villa’s last three wins against Spurs in the league have all been away from home and by a single-goal margin (2-1 in 2008, 1-0 in 2015, 2-1 in 2021).
  • The scorer of Villa’s winner in the 2021 encounter was Ollie Watkins, who also netted in his side’s 2-1 defeat under Nuno back in October 2021 – if Watkins nets on Sunday, he will be the first Englishman since Daniel Sturridge in 2012 to score in 3 successive away encounters against Spurs.
  • Before those encounters, the last New Year’s Day meeting between the sides ended up as a 2-1 win for Villa at Villa Park in 2008, with Maurten Laursen getting a late winner.
  • Spurs have won 14 points from losing positions in the Premier League, more than any other side in the division.
  • However, Spurs have won two of their last six games in the league (against Bournemouth in October and Leeds last month, losing the other three and drawing once).
  • Antonio Conte’s side could set a grim club record of conceding two goals or more in seven consecutive Premier League games.
  • However, Spurs have won seven of their last eight games played on New Year’s Day, and are level with Arsenal on 10 wins as the team to record the most Premier League victories on the day.
  • Spurs’ last New Year’s day defeat and only defeat in that eight-game spell was a 1-0 defeat to Southampton at St. Mary’s under Jose Mourinho (current Villa striker Danny Ings got the winner that day).
  • After winning at Brighton last month, Unai Emery is looking to become the first Villa manager John Gregory in 1998 to win their first two away matches in charge of the club.
  • However, that win in Brighton remains Villa’s only away victory in eight league matches so far this season, with the Villans having drawn two and lost five of the other seven matches.
  • Moreover, Villa have lost their last five league games in London, failing to keep a clean sheet in the capital in their last thirteen visits.
