Spurs should look at alternatives before dropping £27m on ace with 1 goal this season – Opinion

The signing of Giovani Lo Celso in the summer was an extremely long and drawn-out process for Tottenham that infuriated supporters.

Despite BBC Sport reporting a full week before the Champions League final that Spurs had made a bid for the Argentine playmaker, it didn’t take until transfer deadline day for a deal to be completed for the 23-year-old midfielder as Tottenham signed Lo Celso on loan from Real Betis.

Will Levy sign Lo Celso permanently in January?

Yes

No

And now, Mundo Deportivo report that Tottenham could sign Lo Celso permanently in the January window for a cut-price deal of just €32m (£27m).

Although the club’s intentions seem to be signing the former PSG midfielder for good since the very beginning despite only being able to sign Lo Celso on just a season-long loan deal, Tottenham might be wise to consider their options before spending close to £30m on a player who has only managed one goal for the north London side this season as stats from Transfermarkt show.

Indeed, 90min reported earlier last week that Tottenham were keeping an eye on other players in the shape of Lo Celso’s mould, with the likes of Ajax superstar Hakim Ziyech and in-demand Sporting Lisbon captain Bruno Fernandes, two players who could be considered improvements over the Argentine playmaker given how productive the duo have been this season as stats from Transfermarkt show.

With Football London reporting that Lo Celso was signed with the idea to be the long-term successor to Christian Eriksen, Tottenham could be smart in trying to explore other avenues in how to replace the Danish playmaker given how the Argentine is yet to adjust to life in north London.

£27m for an international calibre player is a good deal for many clubs in this era of football, but for Tottenham, the Premier League side could do with holding off from pulling the trigger for Lo Celsa and analyse who could be a genuine, suitable replacement for Eriksen should the 27-year-old midfielder leave the club in January.
