Spurs set their eyes on a new defender

|

According to Italian publication Calciomercato, Spurs have been linked with 20-year-old, Bayer Leverkusen centre-half Piero Hincapie.

Since arriving in Germany last year, he has caught the attention of Europe’s elite with AC Milan and Napoli keeping a keen eye on the youngster.

The Lilywhites are set to make a move for the Ecuadorian international in January and it’s not hard to see why.

With elite defensive numbers, Hincapie ranks amongst the top 6% (across Europe’s top five leagues) for pressures and blocks, in his position.

As well as being strong defensively, Antonio Conte likes his defenders to be comfortable on the ball, and Hincapie does this to a tee. The Bayer Leverkusen defender regularly looks to carry and progress the ball out of defence – often with success as he ranks in the top 12% (across Europe’s top five leagues) for progressive carries, in his position. Profiling very similarly to other centre-halfs like Christian Romero and Alessandro Bastoni.

Despite not currently playing in a back three – he can cover at left-back – which means the transition to the left-hand side of a back three, should be relatively easy.

However, with Ben Davies and Clement Lenglet deputising on the left-hand side of the back three, is another defender needed?
