Spurs handed perfect game to mount a run for first piece of silverware in years – Opinion

No matter the competition, cup draws are always an enticing a gripping event to watch unfold, and Wednesday night’s League Cup third round draw was no different.

Southampton were drawn against long-time rivals Portsmouth to set-up the first South Coast Derby game in over five years, Liverpool travel to MK Dons who will be looking to repeat their 4-0 annihilation of Manchester United in 2014, and for Tottenham, they were handed a seemingly easy tie against League Two side Colchester United.

Indeed, the U’s have been unremarkable at best in their division, currently sitting in 17th place with only one win after five games of the season, and although Colchester were able to knock-out Premier League side Crystal Palace that featured the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Jordan Ayew, they only did so on penalties.

As well as progressing through to the next round via a shootout, Colchester’s one only game against Spurs in their history ended in a big defeat, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side cruising to a 4-1 win in 2016, and the Tottenham boss could not have dreamed of a better fixture as a launching pad for a cup run this season.

Indeed, it appears that this season is now or never for the Premier League side to claim silverware after over a decade since their last honour, which also happened to be the League Cup in 2008.

Whilst reaching a Champions League final and consistently finishing in the top-four is a fantastic step in progression for Spurs and something supporters have enjoyed thoroughly, silverware is ultimately what fans want to see more than anything, and the League Cup would be a good addition to add to Tottenham’s barren accolade list.

Spurs can get the ball rolling in a big way with a positive performance against Colchester, and with history well on their side, Pochettino can start a run to the club’s first piece of silverware in years with a win against the League Two side.
