Spurs Had The Option, Why Wouldn’t We Use It – Now For A New Deal

|

A short time ago Tottenham Hotspur confirmed that they had enacted the 12 month extension clause we had on centre-half Jan Vertonghen’s existing deal.

The 31-year-old Belgian international is slowly closing in on his 300th club appearance following his arrival back in the summer of 2012 for a reported £12million from Dutch giants Ajax and he’s been pretty much worth every penny in reality.

Although he’s out injured at the moment with a thigh strain, and he’s said to be interested in discussing a new longer-term deal in the near future, the option adds 12 months to his time with us and his existing deal will expire in the summer of 2020.

With it meaning that Vertonghen is now another player tied down for the foreseeable future on a contract in our favour, plenty of fans were delighted with the news on social media and of course, others were hopeful that we’d get a few more contractual issues sorted in the very near future as well.
