Spurs can count their blessings for leaving rival’s ground with point – Opinion

Heading into the derby is always a nervy affair for both sets of fans as well as players, yet before kick-off, Tottenham supporters would have bitten your hand off for a draw.

Of course, the main talking point will be Spurs throwing away a 2-0 lead and Arsenal managing to fight back to earn a point in what was an entertaining 2-2 draw for the neutral, yet the result could have easily swung in favour for the Gunners, who dominated the game following the introduction of Dani Ceballos and pinned Tottenham right up to the wall in the final 15 minutes.

Yet Tottenham survived, and in doing so escaped the Emirates Stadium with a point that they can be thankful to walk away with given the circumstances Mauricio Pochettino was put in before the game.

With Kyle Walker-Peters ruled out with injury ahead of the game, Davison Sanchez started at right-back for Spurs to where the Colombian international struggled massively, with Football London giving the centre-back a scathing review of his performance against Arsenal.

Yet despite playing poorly and looking uncomfortable at fullback, damage limitation was minimal as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang failed to impress out on the left-wing before being shifted to centre-forward halfway through the second half and being the man to make Arsenal level on the scoreboard.

With the Gunners being the dominant side in the match as stats from WhoScored show, Spurs can breathe a sigh of relief by allowing to not only take a point from the game but also deny Arsenal from claiming an extra two points in the race for a Champions League spot in the Premier League.

With the international break now in effect, Pochettino now has time to return to the drawing board and rethink how to get Tottenham back on track after a somewhat disappointing start to the season that has only seen Spurs pick up one win so far, and a resilient performance against Arsenal can be used as a template for this change.
