Report: Tottenham ‘sent observers’ to watch 23-year-old, could he replace Hugo Lloris?

|

According to 61saat, Tottenham have ‘sent observers’ to watch Ugurcan Cakir and could battle Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle United to procure his signature. The 23-year-old has made 47 appearances in all competitions for Trabzonspor and represented Turkey’s national team earlier this year.

Tottenham’s alleged interest in Cakir is interesting, however. The young shot-stopper has shipped 18 goals and hasn’t kept a clean sheet in any of his 13 appearances, but 61saat say he’s impressing between the sticks. Cakir is first-choice for Trabzonspor in the Super Lig & Europa League, so he’d likely not join a side that can’t offer him regular football.

Hugo Lloris is first-choice under Mauricio Pochettino while Paulo Gazzaniga is second-choice, and both players are contracted at Tottenham until 2022. Signing Cakir would only make sense if Pochettino was planning on offloading one of the duo, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

A Lloris replacement has been mooted due to him dislocating his elbow, but Spurs aren’t looking to sell just yet. Gazzaniga will replace the 32-year-old until he returns from injury, but it’s hard to see the Lilywhites making a permanent signing mid-season. Time will tell if anything comes of the Cakir rumours.
