Opinion: Tottenham’s next six games could be season defining, here’s why

|

The start of the 2019/20 season has been a tough one for all involved at Tottenham Hotspur. The club has got issues with a number of players and after 14 games in all competitions, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have managed just four wins (Transfermarkt).

However, things are not all bad. The Premier League season is just ten games old and despite the club’s slow start they’ve avoided defeat away at both Arsenal and Manchester City and sit just four points behind 5th placed Arsenal (premierleague.com).

With that being said, the next six games that the club have in the month of November are going to be absolutely crucial and could potentially be season-defining. The Lilywhites have a relatively easy run of fixtures that, on paper at least, you’d expect them to get a few wins out of.

Those six games come in the form of back-to-back trips to Everton and Crvena Zvezda in the Premier League and Champions League, a home tie with Sheffield United before a trip to West Ham, followed by two home games against Olympiacos and Bournemouth (@SpursOfficial).

Whilst Tottenham have these six games, four in the Premier League and two in Europe, there are other bigger games going on domestically. Should Spurs take all 12 points from their four league games they’d more than likely make up ground on the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, who they’re battling for the top four with.

Across the next four game-weeks, Chelsea face Man City, Arsenal travel to Leicester and there’s even the huge meeting between Liverpool and City, so points will be dropped and ground can certainly be made up, it’s just about winning those supposedly easier games for Spurs and make a start to straightening out a tough couple of months early in the campaign.

It certainly won’t be easy. Everton and West Ham away aren’t easy games whilst Bournemouth and Sheffield United aren’t pushovers even on the road. In the Champions League, things will be equally tough, as Pochettino’s side have still got work to do to ensure they make it to the knockout stages, making these six games massive for the club and a chance to turn things around.
