Opinion: Tottenham won’t sign 26-year-old unless Pochettino offloads a full-back

|

According to O Jogo (h/t Sport Witness), Tottenham have been scouting Alex Telles, a left-back who plays for FC Porto. The 26-year-old has attracted interest from Atletico Madrid and Everton, but it’s unknown if he’d be open to a move away from the Estádio do Dragão.

Telles has made 122 appearances for Porto since joining the club from Galatasaray in 2016. The defender has made 32 appearances in all competitions this season and has two-and-a-half-years remaining on his current deal with the Portuguese outfit.

Despite the links, however, it’s hard to see Tottenham making a move for Telles unless they offload an existing player. The uncapped Brazilian would have Ben Davies and Danny Rose ahead of him in the pecking order if he were to join Spurs, so his acquisition wouldn’t make much business sense.

There’s no guarantee that Pochettino will sell one of Davies or Rose either. The latter was heavily-linked with a move to Manchester United in the past, but talk of a transfer has since died down and the England international still has two-and-a-half-years remaining on his existing deal.

As things stand, Spurs haven’t made a permanent signing in the last two transfer windows, so why would they sell an existing fullback just to bring in a new one on a whim?
