Opinion: Tottenham simply cannot let £36m man swap London for Manchester

|

Tottenham fans have got so much time for Harry Winks. The 23-year-old maestro came through the club’s academy system and is well known to be a Tottenham fan living his dream. However, the rumours are that his dream could be cut short as he could be on his way out.

It’s been reported by The Athletic that both Manchester United and Manchester City want to sign the impressive young Tottenham man in the January window, and if he is allowed to be sold then Jose Mourinho will have some serious questions to answer to.

The report from The Athletic comes in the form of a David Ornstein column, and when talking about potential Manchester City signings it states:

‘One of several players thought to be under consideration is Tottenham’s Harry Winks, who appears to have fallen out of favour under Spurs boss Jose Mourinho. Winks has also been discussed by Manchester United though, and the 23-year-old England international is on their list of possible targets for the current window.’

This has to be avoided. It can very easy to look at Harry Winks’ stats for Tottenham in the Premier League and wonder what he brings seeing as he isn’t a ball-winning defensive midfielder yet he also doesn’t bring goals or assists, but in possession, there aren’t much better than the £36m rated midfielder.

Across the 1000 minutes that Winks has amassed in the league alone this season, Winks is averaging 52.1 passes per game with a completion rate of 90.4% and he’s the man who keeps Tottenham ticking over. Playing behind the three attacking midfielders and Harry Kane in a 4-2-3-1, ideally with a defensive option alongside him, Winks really is sublime.

Winks...

Keep

Sell

If Jose Mourinho does opt to let Winks go, be it in January or the summer, then it would show an incredibly naive level of short-termism from the Portuguese tactician, and it would not be a good move at all from Jose if he’s aiming to keep the fans onside.
