Opinion: Tottenham could miss out on £25m midfielder, special relationship to blame

|

The Sun reported on Wednesday that Tottenham were rivalling Everton’s interest in Andre Gomes. Mauricio Pochettino is in the market for a central midfielder as Mousa Dembele was sold to R&F Guangzhou in January and never replaced. Victor Wanyama could fellow the Belgian through the exit door too, leaving Spurs very short on options in a key area.

Gomes has turned his career around since joining Everton on loan from Barcelona. The 25-year-old struggled for form at the Camp Nou but has impressed at Goodison Park. He’s made 25 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees this season, scoring and creating three goals. Gomes’ market value is £25m and he currently earns £5.8m-a-year/£111k-per-week.

Spurs could miss out on his signature over the summer, however. Everton have a special relationship with Barcelona after signing Lucas Digne and Yerry Mina and may be given first refusal on Gomes before another suitor will be considered. Tottenham could lure the Portuguese international with Champions League football, but Gomes appears to be happy at Everton.

He’s played in 23 consecutive Premier League games, most recently helping Everton take a point in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool (March 3) and beat Chelsea (March 17).
