Explained: Tottenham may have to pay £26m and £2.2m salary to sign midfielder

|

According to Tuttosport (h/t Sport Witness), Tottenham are interested in Matias Vecino as a potential replacement for Mousa Dembele. Mauricio Pochettino failed to replace the Belgian international in January and he could be losing another midfielder this summer – Victor Wanyama – which will force him to act in the transfer market when the season comes to a close.

If the Kenyan international leaves, Tottenham will be left with Eric Dier, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks and Dele Alli as options in the middle of the park, but there’s still not enough depth for such an important position and Dembele’s loss can’t be understated. Vecino, however, isn’t a like-for-like replacement.

Vital Spurs has already detailed his lack of dynamism in possession and how poor he is on the ball, so Pochettino may not have the Inter Milan player high on his wishlist. If Spurs do make a move, Tuttosport say he’ll cost around £26m. The Londoners would have to match his £2.2m-a-year/£42k-per-week salary too.

Tottenham should sign a midfielder this summer, but it’s unlikely to be one with such obvious flaws. It does appear that Vecino possesses the qualities Pochettino looks for in a player.
