Opinion: Spurs need to get more from 27-year-old

|

The transfer window ended nearly three weeks ago for clubs in Europe, and Christian Eriksen told the media in his home country that he was now fully focused on playing football.

So why then bar the game against Arsenal has the Dane looked distracted and is so off the pace that he might not even be worth starting.

Last night when Tottenham were holding onto a precious one-goal lead, they needed their players to be calm and composed and not give the ball away, but Eriksen looked so lackadaisical when he was robbed of possession on the edge of his own box.

This led to Spurs conceding a penalty that Mathieu Valbuena duly converted.

The penalty was given away by Jan Vertonghen, but it was Eriksen’s fault – if he had not been so casual then Spurs would not have lost the ball.

His overall performance was shocking as well, and he is clearly thinking of other things rather than just doing his best for Spurs.

The whole Eriksen sage is pretty dull we know he wants to leave to go to Real Madrid, but he should not be allowed to coast through this season.

The 27-year-old is Tottenham’s most creative player, and they need him firing to be at their best.

At the moment he is simply not offering enough to the side, and for Spurs’ next Champions League game I would drop him.

This would send a message that he can’t relax and must perform to be involved in the side.

If Giovani Lo Celso did not pick up an injury, this decision might well have been easier to make, but the Argentine’s setback means Eriksen has no real competition for his spot but allowing games to drift by is unacceptable.

Eriksen has had a superb career in N17, and it would be a shame if he were to tarnish it by allowing his last season to sail past him.
