Opinion: Rumoured transfer of £54m rated January signing could save Tottenham’s season

|

Over the 2019 summer transfer window, Tottenham fans were left very excited on deadline day with both Paulo Dybala and Bruno Fernandes potentially on the move to north London. However, Dybala’s move fell through early (Sky Sports) and then Fernandes later came out and claimed Sporting Lisbon blocked his move to Spurs (Sky Sports).

The links are still there now to the 18-cap midfield man, though, and it’s not out of the equation that the Sporting midfielder makes his way to north London in January, with Portuguese outlet O Jogo claiming that he could be on the move seeing as the club are looking to clear their debts and need 65m euros by the end of January.

As a result of that need for Sporting to sell up, the Spurs supporters could be set to see the £54m rated man (Transfermarkt) make his way to the club, and he could well be the solution to saving Spurs’ sorry season that they’ve suffered through so far.

The creative abilities that Bruno Fernandes possesses make him an incredibly attractive option for the Lilywhites especially seeing as their chief creative man Christian Eriksen has gone off the boil this season and will be set to leave the club at the end of his contract when the season ends.

Looking at the numbers Fernandes is posting, from his attacking midfield base, the 25-year-old has bagged nine goals and six assists in 19 games in all competitions this season (Transfermarkt), but a more in-depth look at his numbers shows just how influential he’s been.

This season so far, Fernandes has averaged 3.4 shots, 3.5 key passes and 1.7 dribbles per game in the Portuguese top-flight, smashing the numbers Eriksen is producing in the Premier League, as well as winning more fouls and putting in over double the tackles that the Dane is managing (WhoScored).

Do we need Bruno Fernandes?

Yes

No

It will certainly take a lot for the Lilywhites to get back on track this season, but should Fernandes come into the club in January and hit the ground running with Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane ahead of him and Tanguy Ndombele behind him, there really is no reason why the Lilywhites can’t hit new heights.
