Opinion: Tottenham making a mistake with Heung-min Son, Toby Alderweireld should be angry

|

According to the Daily Mail, Heung-min Son could be offered a contract extension, just one year after signing a new deal with Tottenham. The 26-year-old was rewarded for his fine form by being handed a substantial payrise in July 2018 to £110k-a-week, twice as much as Toby Alderweireld’s £53k-a-week. A new deal could see the Son earn £150k-a-week – all the while Alderweireld has been denied a 300% payrise for the same amount. It doesn’t seem fair.

Tottenham have worked hard to tie down their important players to long-term deals in the last two-and-a-half years, but Alderweireld’s future is uncertain. He’s out of contract in the next 18 months and can leave if any suitor meets his £26m release clause, so why aren’t the Lilywhites offering him more money to stay? Is Alderweireld not as important to the club’s hopes of future success?

In the last nine months alone, Spurs have agreed new deals for nine first—team players. Alderweireld has made 143 appearances in all competitions since joining from Ajax in 2015 and was regarded as one of the best central defenders in the Premier League when at his best. He turns 30 in March but still has years ahead of him in his career.
