Opinion: Linked January deal could be the turning point in Tottenham’s trophy hunt

|

A lot can be said when it comes to Tottenham Hotspur and winning a trophy. The Lilywhites have arguably had their best years of this current squad and are now trying to salvage silverware by any means necessary with both a manager and a team of players whose best years have gone.

However, with some smart business and a change of ideas, anything can happen in football. Mourinho will undoubtedly want to see some players come into his squad, fresh faces to cause a stir and hopefully get a positive reaction out of those already at Tottenham.

One of those fresh faces is a name that has been linked with the club who is currently plying his trade in Naples. The incredibly powerful centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly has made a name for himself as one of the best defenders in the world, and what a signing he would be if he made his way to North London.

The links between Koulibaly and Spurs have come from Corriere del Mezzogiorno’s Campania edition, via The Daily Star, as it’s claimed that both Chelsea and Spurs are after the Senegalese centre-half to bolster their defences, and it really isn’t hard to see why.

This season Tottenham have already conceded 30 times in the Premier League this season in their 21 games, only nine less than they shipped in the entire 38 game season last year, and Kouliably would go a long way to solving these issues.

When comparing Kouliably to Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, not only is the Napoli man the youngster of the three, he’s also averaging a higher pass completion rate than the Belgian duo this season, as well as putting in more tackles and key passes per game then the Spurs’ defenders (WhoScored).

Will Mourinho fix the defence?

Yes

No

Whether or not this transfer rumour has got legs is yet to be seen. However, it will take a lot of work to get this one done. Players of the Napoli man’s calibre don’t come around all that often, and if this is a deal that can be completed then it simply has to be done.
