Opinion: If the season was to end now, this is the Tottenham man who deserves all the plaudits

|

Tottenham’s 2019/20 season has been a rollercoaster of emotions, and for the most part, it’s been one to forget. However, as much as the Lilywhites have struggled at times, there have been bright moments and individuals that have stepped up when called upon.

Today’s news has broken and the latest from the Premier League is that no football will be played until at least April 30th (Sky Sports), so to try and help everyone through these bland football-lacking times, we’re trying to keep the mood high by naming and explaining who we believe to be Spurs’ player of the season so far.

There are certainly a few candidates and some names that we simply have to mention. The first of those is Serge Aurier. The Ivorian is hardly a favourite amongst the fans, but he’s been a consistent performer and under Jose Mourinho has found a home as an attacking full-back with licence to attack, and that’s shown as he’s managed two goals and seven assists this season (Transfermarkt).

Aurier isn’t our pick for the POTS, though, and neither is the nest player who we simply had to mention: Japhet Tanganga. The youngster’s breakthrough into the senior side has been incredible, and at just 20-years-old the maturity he’s shown has been sublime, but with just six Premier League appearances (WhoScored), he can’t be given the POTS award.

'When he scored the goal the game finished for him. After that I needed 11 players for my defensive organisation and I had just 10.'

The final man who gets a mention is one of the Lilywhites’ last fit attacking options still standing, and it’s Dele Alli. A massive spike in form around the time of Jose Mourinho’s appointment ensures he gets a mention here, registering a combined eight goals and assists in an eleven game spell between late October and late December (Transfermarkt).

Now that we’ve got our honourable mentions out of the way, though, it’s time to talk about the man of the hour who we firmly believe is the club’s standout option for the player of the season award, and many of you may have guessed by now who it is.

It’s a new signing, it’s a midfield maestro, and it’s Giovani Lo Celso. The Argentine has been nothing short of phenomenal whenever he’s played. His versatility has seen him feature in a few different roles for Spurs, but consistently he’s been one of the best players on the pitch under both Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho.

At just 23-years-old, Lo Celso’s stats have been sublime. In the Premier League alone he’s averaging 1.1 dribbles, 0.9 key passes, 1.6 tackles and 1.2 long balls per game (WhoScored), and the way he keeps the Lilywhites ticking over in possession whilst also offering himself as a terrier who can lead the press and win the ball back out of possession is nothing short of special.

The former PSG and Real Betis man is yet to score a goal in the league for the Lilywhites, but he’s proven he knows where the goals is with two strikes so far in his Spurs career, one in the FA Cup and one in the Champions League (Transfermarkt), and if he can continue to build upon his strong start for the club when football eventually returns then he’s surely a shoo-in to be named player of the season for Spurs.

What on earth are you smoking?
    Give me a break.
Dele and Aurier? two players we want to rid next season. Bang Average at best. Dele is one self centered overrated player.

On the other hand, Gio has been great for us, but for how many games?

Is there some kind of racist shit going on here?

No Son mentioned? I pray you’re not biased with your personal views. He only had 16 goals and we haven’t won since he got injured.
Just reminding your incompetent writer. Get your act together.
