Opinion: Gedson Fernandes signing marks the start of a new era at Tottenham, here’s why…

|

The Mauricio Pochettino days at Tottenham are over, and whilst the majority of the Argentine’s squad remains at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the playing style we became so used to seeing under the inspirational young manager is also long gone, as Jose Mourinho has come into the club.

However, whilst the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid boss has changed the style at Spurs in his two months in the job, he hasn’t had a real chance to change the playing staff, although it looks like that is seriously about to change.

Mourinho has already brought in his first signing of his time at Tottenham and, as you’ll all know, that signing is the superb young Portuguese midfielder, Gedson Fernandes (BBC). The 21-year-old midfielder has got all the talents to cut it in the Premier League, and now we get to see it first hand in north London.

Taking a deeper look into the player, despite his young age, the Portuguese U21 international’s strengths, as listed on WhoScored, are his dribbling and tackling, and it looks a lot like the youngster could be the answer to Moussa Sissoko’s injury in the short term, and a full replacement for the Frenchman in the long term.

This truly marks the start of the Mourinho era. There is no coincidence that the first signing Tottenham make with Mourinho is a combative midfielder, capable of playing in a two or a three as well as out wide on the right, who excels in the tackle and when bursting forward with the ball.

Gedson Fernandes

He'll star!

Flop

We expect to see more from Gedson in a technical sense than we have from Moussa Sissoko, let’s make that clear, as the youngster does have the ability to score goals and create goals as well, but whether we’ll immediately see that from the 21-year-old is yet to be seen.
