Opinion: Forget about right-back woes, Tottenham have other huge problem area

|

Tottenham supporters have been harping on for a very long time about how shambolic their options at right-back are, yet as far as we’re concerned, the full-back problems are far from exclusive to the right-back role, as they have similar issues at left-back.

It’s not made to look as bad on the left, though, as Mauricio Pochettino has both Danny Rose and Ben Davies playing in the role. That doesn’t mean they’re in a good way on that side, though. Davies has barely featured this season and Rose never seems to be more than a few minutes away from a mistake.

Over the course of the summer, Rose headed up an eight-man shortlist that The Daily Mail claimed would be allowed to leave the club if the right offer came in for them, yet that didn’t happen and Rose has stayed, now causing issues in defence even if he is a full-blooded player.

Davies has barely featured, as we said, and whilst he doesn’t seem to be a problem player at all, if he can’t get into the Tottenham side on a consistent basis ahead of Rose then something is very, very wrong. It certainly isn’t helped either by the fact that Ryan Sessegnon is still injured.

The young signing from Fulham is one who even when he’s fit we’re not quite sure where he’s going to fit in. The teenager has all the talents and ability to step into the role that Rose played in the 2015/16 season, bombing up and down the left flank, but his age and lack of experience is a concern, as is the question of where is his best position.

At times he can be found plying his trade further upfield on the left-flank as a winger, although it’s hard to predict what will happen when he’s fit. For now, though, it’s Rose who is the first-choice left-back and despite his performances this season, it seems the left-back role is going under the radar because of the shambles on the other side.
