Opinion: Despite imminent deal for Bergwijn, Tottenham must ensure they bring in £28.8m man

|

As easy as it is to get very excited about the potential and supposedly impending signing of the young winger Steven Bergwijn, Tottenham fans must not get too ahead of themselves. We all know how exciting it is when Fabrizio Romano is signing off transfers with his famous ‘Here we go!’, but Spurs need more than the Dutchman.

If anything, the argument can be made that Bergwijn should not be the priority of this window. By most accounts, it appears that the 22-year-old is a signing that has come about out of opportunity. The winger became available so Spurs pounced, however, a more measured approach is being taken with a striker.

No, instead, when it comes to bringing in an alternative #9 to feature either alongside or instead of Harry Kane is vital. Down the years we’ve seen Emmanuel Adebayor, Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente all play second fiddle to the England captain, but someone needs to relieve the burden on Spurs’ record Premier League scorer.

That man looks to be Krzysztof Piatek. The Polish striker has long been linked with a move to north London this window and at the age of 24-years-old and with a couple of years at the highest level in Serie A under his belt, the AC Milan man looks like a perfect fit as Calcio Mercato claim the Lilywhites are ready to present a new offer to the Rossoneri for the player.

In an ideal world, the Lilywhites will have both the deals for Piatek and Bergwijn wrapped up, Christian Eriksen out of the door and Giovani Lo Celso’s loan move made permanent by the end of Friday’s deadline, but a lot still has to be done to ensure this all goes ahead, especially so with the move for the £28.8m rated Piatek (Transfermarkt).

Piatek...

SIGN HIM, JOSE!

No! Get a defender!

If anything, though, we know how important it is to give Kane some competition and rotation and to do that Piatek needs to be signed. The need for a forward is massive, and as much as we all want to sign Bergwijn and Lo Celso, bringing in a #9 has to be the priority.
