Official: Tottenham defender ruled out of Newcastle clash, player still ‘on the sidelines’

|

Tottenham have confirmed that Juan Foyth will miss Sunday’s meeting with Newcastle United despite returning from suspension. The 21-year-old is still ‘on the sidelines’ after suffering an ankle injury and isn’t ready to make his return.

Foyth initially had a three-match ban following a red card against Bournemouth at the end of last season, but supporters will have to wait a bit longer to see him back out on the pitch. The Argentina international could have an important role to play in 2019/20 after Kieran Trippier’s departure too.

Mauricio Pochettino has Foyth, Kyle Walker-Peters and Serge Aurier to choose from at right-back. Eric Dier is capable of deputising in the role too. Walker-Peters has been a regular in defence so far this season, but Foyth will provide stiff competition for places when he returns.

Since joining Spurs from Estudiantes in August 2017, the youngster has gone on to make 25 appearances in all competitions. He still finds himself in a backup role under Pochettino but does also have his manager’s confidence that he’ll be a first-team player before too long.

With Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld out of contract next summer, Foyth could be key to bolstering up the defence in their absence. Time will tell.
