Match Thread – Spurs To Go A Wandering Against Wycombe

|

Fresh from our clinical, albeit not great, display against Sheffield United, the fixtures for Tottenham Hotspur have given us a small, but much needed break, and we aren’t in action again until next Monday where attentions again turn to a possible trip to Wembley.

Our next opponents are Championship team Wycombe Wanderers in the fourth round of the FA Cup and although the struggling side are bottom of the second tier table, the pattern this year for manager Jose Mourinho’s select XI has been to struggle against the strugglers.

As I type, the only injury I’m aware of is the long standing issue with Giovani Lo Celso and even if a knock or two was picked up in the last match, the week’s break here should do the trick, so it again becomes about how much Mourinho wants to tinker with an eye to the fixtures ahead.

Let’s be honest though, banana skin or not, this is another of those games fe4w won’t expect us to win and win comfortably at that. Let’s hope we’ve got our shooting boots on again.

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

Let’s hope this lot have got to know each other a bit better than the last time they played together! :- )

  • TQ2Spurs says:

BS and Jod, going back to our earlier conversation, Ole does have one very good talent, he can see into the future. In his post match interview yesterday he said he knew Bruno would score him a free kick if he brought him on.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

In tribute to Ole, I will make a prediction; Bale to score one of his 25 yarder, free-kick specials. Top left-hand corner!

  • 123spurs says:

Now your making me laugh, BS a spoiler alert for jose tactics,

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Looks like the cavalry will be needed yet again!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Final scoreline is a bit flattering, I wonder if our starting 11 will ever get a rest?

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I wouldn’t say the scoreline is flattering TQ. We had countless efforts on goal. If it wasn’t for some poor finishing we could’ve/should’ve slaughtered them.

Anyway I’m happy. I predicted 1-4 and Bale to score. Not that I win any prizes for it… 😉

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Just a thought…

But didn’t their manager used to be Alice Cooper?!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

HT….apparently he does sing lead ina rock band!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I doubt there is many on here who remember his songs HT, by the way, he is a very good golfer!

  • Niall D says:

As HT says we had countless efforts on goal
Well 28 to be exact 10 on target.
    I think they had 2.
TQ’s selective memory is in good form in this thread.
For me it was a vintage Spurs performance plenty of dominance 78% possession, plenty of chances.
Good to see Bale going through the gears a bit tonight.
I know Winks got MOM but for me it was Bale.
    Good result.

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Niall…..I’m not sure what you read that suggest I have a selective memory. I call it as I see it and once again we put out a largely second eleven who couldn’t get the job done so we had to press some of our usual starters into service again. Yes, we created a good number of chances, even before the cavalry arrived, but they all went begging because the players weren’t capable of hitting the target. We only really took control of the game after their players ran out of steam around 75/80 minutes, up to that point the game could have gone either way.

This might seem critical considering the scoreline but that is why I said it was flattering, look at the newspaper reports this morning and you’ll find most if not all say the same thing!

  • jod says:

Could have killed the game off earlier but job done. Two things from the match. Firstly they played a physical game you just don’t see in the premier league these days, their centre forward in particular was just too strong for our central defenders, they were being comfortably outmuscled and there was nothing they could do about it. As I say in our usual games we just don’t come up against a player like that. The other thing was Winks’s goal. If he can finish like that why does he normally blast the ball into the stands ?

  • Allan says:

Accept comments @ Man U however my point was that they have bought a couple of good midfield players who seem to last whereas our crop are injured most of the time or wish to move to PSG !

As to the game . What a pity he had to bring on the big guns against a tiring and combative side .

Not sure about Bale. Could have won us the match by HT . Are his golf shots are as bad as his goal attempts ?Perhaps he ought to spend more time on the golf course !!

Has he got a different hair style and if so how does he find a hairdresser . I see the alice band has now been ditched . ( MY hair is looking like a combination of Robinson Cruso ansd Rasputin )

Anyway lets hope we can do a job against a so called out of form Liverpool .

  • Allan says:

    Wow Niall

    Bale MOTM ? Ok !!!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I thought that Bale had a very good game. He was looking much sharper and improved as the game went on…

He needs to build on this. And he needs more game-time to do this.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

It was good to see Bale play the whole 90 minutes and yes, there were glimpses of the old GB other than the fact he wasn’t the clinical finisher that we have seen in the past. Hopefully he will gain confidence from getting a full competitive game in.

  • PompeyYid says:

Well HT good prediction, me I went for 0-4, nevermind lol!
Did any one have the same feeling as me watching last night, “it looks like its going to be one of those nights/games” pretty much dominating, poor finishing in general, unlucky, hitting woodwork 3 or 4 times, even from a deflection etc, but in the end Prem standard shone through in those 5 mins right at the end.

We could/should of quite easily of wrapped the game up in the first 15mins, Gareth in particular, rusty, though thought at times he looked like what we are expecting of him, in my opinion he had a very good game considering his rustiness, sharpness and match fitness, really should have had a hat trick.

Winks, way way better, what a cool head for that finish.

N’Dombele really starting to show what we paid for, his first goal sublime finish with his instep, and then add his almost “Ricky Villaesq” goal, loved it.

Alice Cooper, brilliant show man, I love his music and style.

Ah! well, still in the FA Cup….next! COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Talking of Alice Cooper brings back some great memories for me of days cruising in my Ford Capri with the 8 track stereo blasting out Billion Dollar Babies. Use to love this one, the guitar solo at the end is great played loud!

    TQ
Just like you I watched the game.
As many have said here we could’ve /should’ve been home and dry in the first half.
I re watched the highlights, they had two chances and one goal.
The rest of their game was very much back to the wall.
    On our team
    We had shots from
    Bale
    Vinnie
    Sonny
    HK
    Winksy
    N’Dombers
We scored and hit the woodwork twice in the 1st half.
Rather than bringing out the calvary, it could also be prudent to say that JM wanted to give his main men a run out for half an hour prior to the Liverpool game, there is an argument for both.
I just thought that 4 goals could’ve easily been 7 is not flattering to deceive for me it’s a pretty emphatic
    Win.
Allan yep I thought Bale had a great game and with a bit more sharpness could’ve bagged 3 last night
I’ve been calling for him to up the gears a bit and last night he did just that
I do think he drifted away a bit after 80 mins but yes he was involved in much of our positive play
I call it as I see it.
A lot on here were saying about lack of possession and attempts on goal
Well 70% possession 20 odd attempts 3 wood work 4 goals for me at least is pretty emphatic.
    TQ re selective memory
Twice you have mis quoted me in this thread.
You said about some saying Tuchel was bad.
This was my quote in an earlier thread, I did not say that, I said if he was “so good” why get rid that’s not saying he’s bad
You then quoted me as saying time will tell re Tuchel at Chelsea, again I didn’t say that.
I wished him well for 6 to 18 months, as that’s what nearly all Chelsea managers get.
But in reality was only having a bit of fun m8.

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi Niall…….All good with me my friend, I would never deliberately or knowingly misquote you, at worst I might misinterprete your words but no more. :- )

  • BelgianSpur says:

I think it was a job well done, we’re still going in 4 competitions (!) so I think we need to have reasonable expectations when it comes to the manner in which we win those games.

Like HT I was encouraged by Bale’s display. The finishing may have been off, but the movement and the reading of the game were good. I believe the finishing will improve with more sharpness. He did seem to fade as the game went on, but at least it’s something to build on.

I was alarmed at how easily Toby was turned for Wycombe’s goal – that’s not a good sign. As jod said, it’s a different type of striker, but you’d still expect Toby to deal with that sort of threat with his experience. Surely he would have been briefed before the game. It was naïve. Is this the reason why Rodon has been given opportunities recently?

For the rest, I’m not sure what to make of “the cavalry”. On the plus side, they didn’t have to start and only had to play a few minutes.

On the other, for all of those clamouring for Vinicius/Moura to get more game time, this sort of performance hardly bodes well for them. If they can’t boss a game against Wycombe, it’s unlikely they will against vastly superior opposition.

    On to Liverpool.
