Match Thread – Spurs Need To Throw Caution To The Wolves & End With Some Momentum

|

With an embarrassing performance in the defeat to Leeds United in our last match, Tottenham Hotspur now have three more chances to try and end, what has ultimately been a disappointing 2020/21 campaign, on a high as we welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to White Hart Lane.

After so much early promise when we were challenging well on all fronts, the wheels well and truly fell off after the turn of the year, and even the relative high points have still been tinged with disappointments given our inconsistent, pragmatic approach to attacking.

It’s going to be a difficult, but big and important summer, for Spurs – the main question for fans will be answered by the next managerial appointment. Get that right and there will be renewed hope of the type of player turnover most seem to want, get that wrong and many will take it as a sign that nothing has changed and certainly, that nothing has been learned.

Wolves first, Aston Villa next and then Leicester City for the curtain closer.

To Dare Is To Do, so will we do just that?

Wolves

Win

Draw

Lose

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Sounds like Lyon are trying to get rid of Joachim Anderson, but who knows about such reports? Does he have the positional sense? Could our man L King teach it to him? The biggest problem with most of our CBs this year was being caught out of position time after time.

  • Danny Winter says:

We were linked with him a couple of years back when it looked like Toby could be off.

  • 123spurs says:

Let the players take a 30% pay cut. Might give them more fight n hunger on the pitch.

  • TK says:

    123,

Pay on performance? Lose money for being out of position? Gain money making a crucial block?

Maybe rank order the players in a match?

But imagine the legal battles over who and how the evaluations are made.

N’dombele Instagram showing a hour glass? He wants out? Tell him to find someone to pay the amount it took to bring him in.

  • 123spurs says:

Not like that, but failing to get top 4, they will get it back if they get top4. Players don’t care anymore they still get their huge wages, CL wages and europa league level or less performances.

  • 123spurs says:

Mason should never off been put in charge, now we have a chance of not even making top 7 EL.

  • TK says:

Ah, I grasp you pay for performance idea.

I doubt that could be done with basic pay, but a contract could have performance bonuses built into it. But what agent would want a client to sign such a contract? A player could lose the bonus because another player screws up.

Imagine in the CL final when Sissoko get the handball penalty call in the first minute? Can you imagine the team when everyone lost the big bonus payout of 30% after the match. Sissoko would have had to retreat to France and never come back.

The finger pointing would be vicious .

  • TQ2Spurs says:

TK….you’ve probably hit on the reason why we have been so inconsistent since the CL final! lol

Seriously though, my understanding is that our squad do have performance related bonuses as part of their contracts.

    • TK says:

      TQ25 purrs,

Are the bonuses based on Individual player’s performances or the team’s performance?

Of course, the real downside to bonuses, at least of the negative sort, is that we don’t want players playing afraid to make mistakes. I think that’s what happened far too often under Mourinho. No one can play football well if they’re playing afraid to make a mistake.

  • 123spurs says:

How many times have we had 4 to 6 players well under perfomering all on the same day. It has happened way to often, a lot of players need to leave, some are stealing a wage. New manager will have his work cut out. Dier should of been sold years ago just an example.

  • 123spurs says:

7th heaven is in our hands, a gateway to the UCL and a trophy to go with it. Surely we can’t mess it up with 3 games to go.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Everton drop points so they are still below us but only on goal difference. Must beat the Wolves to stay ahead or even overtake Liverpool if they lose at United tonight.

  • 123spurs says:

Since the CL final, we were poor since January, and nearly lost out on top 4

  • TK says:

Getting to the CL final seems to have done us harm. Nothing has gone right since, at least in terms of team results.

  • 123spurs says:

TK we were poor well before the CL final

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Huh……the one time you want United to win they let you down! 🙁

  • Niall D says:

Yep TQ I’m am a total Abu anyteam but united but tonite I was, sort of in their camp.
Just thinking a lot of us are saying about a clear out, personally I want 6 or 7 to go heres my list.
Aurier, Regulon, Winks, Bergs,, Dier, Sissoko, (Doherty, Dave, Lamella, Vinnie)
I’ve nailed my colours to the mast and stated who I want out, I’ll even accept any 5 of em away.
I’ve put in brackets, who I wouldn’t miss too much if they were to go, do any of you have a list?
Do you agree with me, or do you have a totally different list with none of those.

  • TK says:

    Niall

The obvious player to ship out is Harry Kane. Who does he think he is? Always playing like he’s better than anyone else. Who does he think he is? Making everyone else look worse in comparison to the way he’s playing. Who does he think he is? Ship ‘im out!

Harder to say who is the one player who most obviously is necessary to keep. To me it’s Carlos Vinicius. Yes, I know he’s not a great goal scorer or even a great football player but he’s from Maranhão, Brazil, and Maranhão is the center of Rasta culture in Brasil, so at least Carlos Vinicius knows who is is. Who does he think he is? He scores it on the one-drop, in a rub-a-dub stylee. He’ll never score a fancy goal, but he taps em in just cool and deadly. I wonder who DL thought he was? But he’s harmless. He can chill with us.

So, in sum: Kane our! Who does he think he is? Thinks he’s better than the rest?

And keep Carlos Vinicius. Who does he think he is? The toke tapper tipping ’em in the goal.

Or, we could go with the list Niall suggested. It isn’t far off.

I’m fairly sure I wouldn’t keep Gareth Bale. Not at the salary he’s getting.

What good is a vanity player who gives us the occasional spectacular game, and then long stretches of lethargy on the pitch or in the reserves? Better to spend the money on something beyond a vanity project. Those matches vs Arse and Citeh did it for me.

  • Spurfect One says:

I’m glad this season is nearing to an end. I don’t think things will get better, maybe even worse. We have players on long contracts who are not good enough. Dier, Davies, Sanchez, Doherty, Sissoko and Winks. Firstly who is going to buy them and pay them the salaries they are on at Spurs. Levy by increasing their market value with long contracts really has hindered of what we can do in the transfer market to push us on.

  • 123spurs says:

Spot on Neill with the players.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

No chance of top 4 now, even if one of Chelsea or Leicester slip up Liverpool are well placed to take their spot, their last three games are WBA, Burnley and Palace all of whom have nothing to play for now. Best we can hope for is to finish 6th or more likely 7th and hope for a EL spot. I know we need it for the extra income but honestly wouldn’t bother me if we missed out and gave the new manager more time to work on rebuilding the squad.
