Match Thread – Chelsea Means More Than Just Bragging Rights For Spurs

|

2020/21’s congested fixture list continues for Tottenham Hotspur as we have another speedy turnaround from European action and we look forward to this years’ trip to Stamford Bridge to take on Frank Lampard’s Chelsea team.

The game always has some spice to it for understandable reasons but I doubt the Pensioners will have yet forgiven manager Jose Mourinho for his u-turn and I significantly doubt we sit in top spot in front of them by two points, so there’s no way we can be complacent for this one as more than bragging rights are up for grabs.

As we know, Toby Alderweireld will be out for this one with his muscle injury, but it seems the club are pretty confident that Hugo Lloris, Erik Lamela and Steven Bergwijn will pass late fitness tests after the knocks they picked up over the last week which saw them miss out on Ludogorets.

Until we kick off, all eyes to the other fixtures to see whether we can open up a gap at the top of the table on Sunday – whichever way you look at this game, the result is the important thing, not specifically the performance but if we can keep our improvements going, even better.

Chelsea...

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

    Come on you saints! 🙂

  • Geofspurs says:

Three games tonight. I think we need the results to be a home win, an away win, and a draw! Yes?

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Saints vs United draw. Wolves to beat the Gooners…

    Spurs to thrash Chelsea…

And we all live happily ever after… Until the next game, at least.

    Up the Spurs!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

My heart says home win, away win, and away win but reasoning says draw, draw, and away win.

They key to our match could be how we deal with Werner, whoever is responsible for policing him is going to have to be at the top of their game.

  • Geofspurs says:

HT …. Actually I was thinking Spurs and Southampton to win (United have a game in hand) and Arsenal to draw. But the main result is a Spurs win of course.

  • PompeyYid says:

TQ…you talk of us having to police Werner, so the same thing could be said of the Chavs having to police “our Arry” and Son, the trouble with that statement is that it does go further, as Werner isn’t a one man band the rest of the Chavs have to be watched also for their movement, passing/supply to him, thus the same for us, with “them” say for one example watching N’Dombele very closely, it is going to be about both sets keeping a sharp eye on ?, whomever does it best will win I think. COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

Mind regards my last post, luck, VAR decisions, ref all have to be taken into account! So COYS

  • Geofspurs says:

When all the top clubs meet each other I expect the basic thinking is if we lose away we can beat them at home. Usually the home team would be the favourite which is fair enough. That’s why all the pressure is on Chelsea. After beating United, City, and Chelsea (in the cup) so far, it would be a major statement to beat them again, especially on their ground. The crucial element of this game is for us to maintain concentration and defend well for 90 minutes. In other words, a repeat of the City performance. Our attack should take care of the rest. That’s how I see it anyway, lads. : – )

  • TQ2Spurs says:

PY….of course the game is 11 v 11 but for me Werner is the player most likely to give our defence a difficult time, it goes without saying if we can stop the supply to him in the first place it will help.

There is no doubt Chelsea will be conscious of the threat Harry and Sonny pose, there have been a number of games where the opposition has attempted to man mark Harry out of the game which is why he drops deeper dragging the opposition centre backs out to make space for our wide players. We saw this happen to great effect against City.

  • Stan Rosenthal says:

Geoff wants a repeat of the City game. I have my doubt about that approach which depended on defending for almost the whole of the game. Booting the ball out and just waiting for the next attack..

The problem with those tactics is the concentration levels required and the part that luck plays in keeping the ball out of our net. Without Toby I don’t think we can rely on those levels of concentration (particularly from Sanchez who is prone to the odd brain fart or two) Nor can we rely on our luck holding as it has been in recent games. So I would prefer much more emphasis to be given to possession and attack in this game. Thankfully we now have sufficient quality attacking players to do this.

    • Stan Rosenthal says:

Doesn’t really answer my points Geoff. It wasn’t the result I didn’t want but our defensive approach to the game that may not come off this time for the reasons I gave (particularly with the change we have had to make to cover for Toby). My reference to booting the ball out was to the tactics we were employing in the City game which again I think won’t be so successful in this game.

  • Geofspurs says:

Stan … Yes, I want a 2-0 result. Don’t you? Yes, I want our defenders to maintain concentration for 90 minutes. Don’t you? As they are your thoughts and not mine, why do you want us to boot the ball out and wait for the next attack?

  • 123spurs says:

    Bye bye ole.

  • 123spurs says:

Both teams are scoring but also both defenses are not conceding.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Disappointing to see Soton let United back into the game, was hoping they would at least hold out for the draw.

  • jod says:

Rodon starting, didn’t see that coming.

  • wentworth says:

Let’s hope we don’t fall for Chelsea’s niggling tactics and get involved with retaliation. We don’t need red or yellow cards. Chelsea will wind us up and then win. Keep calm.

  • Geofspurs says:

Playing well. Very much a repeat of the City game.

  • jod says:

Very tough match, on the basis of that and the City game you would have to say Chelsea look a more dangerous team. I understand why Rodon started now, he dealt with Abraham very well. I’m not sure why Lampard left it so late to bring on Giroud but I’m not complaining. He and Lo Celsco will both be kicking themselves for blowing late chances to win it. To me its a point won rather than two dropped.

  • Love totty says:

Disciplined but uninspiring performance. Will need more ambition to win anything.

  • Geofspurs says:

Good first half but poor second half due to too many wayward passes. But, nevertheless, a very acceptable result on the road.
