Match Thread – Chelsea Means More Than Just Bragging Rights For Spurs

|

2020/21’s congested fixture list continues for Tottenham Hotspur as we have another speedy turnaround from European action and we look forward to this years’ trip to Stamford Bridge to take on Frank Lampard’s Chelsea team.

The game always has some spice to it for understandable reasons but I doubt the Pensioners will have yet forgiven manager Jose Mourinho for his u-turn and I significantly doubt we sit in top spot in front of them by two points, so there’s no way we can be complacent for this one as more than bragging rights are up for grabs.

As we know, Toby Alderweireld will be out for this one with his muscle injury, but it seems the club are pretty confident that Hugo Lloris, Erik Lamela and Steven Bergwijn will pass late fitness tests after the knocks they picked up over the last week which saw them miss out on Ludogorets.

Until we kick off, all eyes to the other fixtures to see whether we can open up a gap at the top of the table on Sunday – whichever way you look at this game, the result is the important thing, not specifically the performance but if we can keep our improvements going, even better.

Allan – I also take your point about our goals scored record having to be taken with a grain of salt, given how little they have been spread out.

But I also agree with Geof. Sure we can be negative about the lack of goals vs. bus parking teams, but as Geof pointed out, plenty of other “big teams” have struggled to score loads vs those opponents, and when they have, it’s often been at the detriment of conceding more as well.

We narrowly beat WBA 1-0, but Chelsea drew 3-3. Yes they scored more, but shipped 3 goals in the process.

Being open and positive is more fun to watch, certainly for neutrals, but when we did that against West Ham, we were eventully punished. We could unleash our forwards, which would probably lead to more goals scored, but that would probably be at the detriment of the defensive work they do high up the pitch.

In the end, it’s all a question of where you put the cursor, as a team, on attacking vs. defending. Aston Villa has scored 20 goals to our 21, but they’re currently 1àth after a bright start. This tells me that while they’re competent fgoing forward, this is at the detriment of their defending and they lack balance.

As a final comment, I had a quick look at the number of times that Liverpool, Chelsea, Villa, Leicester and Evertonhave scored 3 or more goals in the first 10 games, compared to us. Along with us, those teams currently boast the best attacking stats in the league.

We have scored 3 or more goals on 3 occasions – which is exactly the same as Liverpool, Everton, and Southampton.

Villa and Leicester have managed the feat 4 times. Chelsea have sdone it 6 times.

So with the exception of Chelsea, who seem to be in a free scoring ctegory of their own at the moment, we are right there with the other top performers in the league, attacking wise.

5 games going into the last 5 minutes of a game and end up dropping point, set pieces ring a bell, and why hasnt jose learned from this. 4 games ago title talk now its a struggle to finish top 4.
