Match Thread – Almost Spurs’ LASK Europa Group Game

|

December means only one thing for Tottenham Hotspur fans – yet another month of fixture congestion and burnout concerns for manager Jose Mourinho and the associated injury issues – okay, maybe that’s more than just one thing, but Thursday is our penultimate Europa League Group J clash and we face LASK once again.

With a pretty comfortable 3-0 victory in the effective first leg against LASK, Mourinho will shake the squad up again for this one after our battling draw against Chelsea, but we should have more than enough in the tank to take another win and secure our progression through to the next round – the Antwerp clash should simply decide who tops the table and takes J’s top spot.

As most will know, Toby Alderweireld is already ruled out for this clash with his injury and according to PhysioRoom also have Erik Lamela as remaining out of contention for this one.

We’ll wait for the official update, but few will see anything other than another victory here.

LASK...

Win

Draw

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

PY……..you shouldn’t embarrass EJ by asking such personal questions! lol

    • PompeyYid says:

TQ……..Thanks for that, so I must say sorry to EJ, no I wont he will have a sense of humour, trouble with me is I have a mixture of dry/builders/military sense of humour, by the way mate I know you are only kidding, how’s it going your end. COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

All good here PY, gearing up for the madness that is Christmas. :- ) Hope you and yours are too.

    • PompeyYid says:

We are good TQ, well as best as can be expected with the missus and all, but basically in the same position as yourselves. COYS

  • Allan says:

    Hart

    Davies Tangi Sanchez Doherty

    Hojberg Lo Celso Ndombele

    Moura Bale Sonny

An incredibly strong team. JM certainly is going for it .Hopefully win it by HT so can rest a few for 2nd half

  • TQ2Spurs says:

It’s the midfield we’ve all been waiting for! 🙂

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Agree Allan, we need to sub off Sonny and at least 2 of the midfield 3 as early as possible.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

People talk about a draw being enough to qualify but don’t we need to win the group to get a better draw in the next round?

  • 123spurs says:

Bale closes his eyes, the hole is the goal.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

You’ve got to say, it’s a pretty hapless performance again so far.

  • 123spurs says:

    Sunny side up

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Hardly convincing was it, failed to defend a lead in the last few minutes again.

  • Niall D says:

    Poor performance.
Very weak midfield, if that’s the N’Dombele, Loceslo mix we were waiting for. FORGET IT.
SANCHEZ again found wanting for two of their goals.
Joe Hart showed why nobody wanted him.
Job done, I suppose. It is Europe and all that.
But can’t defend a terrible performance.
Maybe just didn’t gel on the night.
    But an awful watch.

  • wentworth says:

Awful game, terrible performance. With the exception of Bale, Hojbjerb, N’Dombele and Son, these were a group of mediocre squad player. Very poor defence, impotent midfield. So little to be excited about. Not sure why we bought Doherty and Lo Celso ..two very average players. No where near good enough. Sanchez was in panic mode. These players should be fighting for a first team place. Very disappointing and a waste of an evening.

  • 123spurs says:

Well that was disappointing, the way we couldn’t see out the game. Time to move and hopefully learn from it. Likes of Doherty and sanchez really needs to up their game.

  • Stan Rosenthal says:

What’s happened to Doherty!?! Couldn’t do a thing right. And packing the ream with defenders towards the end doesn’t work if one of them is Sanchez and you keep giving the ball away.

  • Geofspurs says:

Not the best game but job done. Even if we’d won we would still have to win next week to top the group …. so drawing hasn’t damaged our chances. Not sure why Son played so long, or even why he played at all, given that he will be one of our main weapons at the weekend. It seems a very risky decision.

  • Niall D says:

    Hi Geoff
Unfortunately “injuries” to Vinnie and yet AGAIN people like Lamella + the failure to hold on to a lead, means that unfortunately Sonny had to stay on to try to keep some kind of forward threat.
It looks like this lot were about 2 years and 20 league places behind where we should be.
A lot of squad player here need to look at them selves from Dohs “slip and injury” for their first goal
To Sanchez positioning through Harts goalkeeping “efforts”.
How was he no1 for England.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Very disappointing performance, the last time a Spurs side really ‘clicked’ was away at OT. I was very optimistic for Sunday prior to tonights game, can’t say I feel the same after seeing the gooners kids (in the main) putting the Austrian team one place below LASK to the sword this evening.

    • Geofspurs says:

TQ …. But both Arsenal and Spurs will be fielding far different teams at the weekend. And we both know that what happens in one game does not transfer to the next one. She’ll be right …. I think!

      • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi Geof….yeah I get that but prior to the game Jose was insistent that the focus was on this game, not on the NLD which suggested we were going there to win. It never really looked like we were going to.

Regarding Sundays team, yes they will be different but the Gooners managed to despatch Rapid Vienna (who are only 1 place below LASK in their league) comfortably with mostly youngsters playing and almost all of their first 11 rested.

Jose has been questioning the attitude of some of the players towards the EL competition, I think maybe he should question his own attitude and how he sets the team up tactically. We conceded possession to a side that took confidence from this and upped their game, I read that this was only the second time in history that an Austrian side has scored three or more goals against an English side home or away!
