Match Thread – A Palace Of A Distraction But Spurs Have To Look To 2020/21

|

It’s been a strange old season and it’s been a strange calendar year for Tottenham Hotspur. The highs of the Champions League Final and then the lows of seeing our form and usual performance levels fall through the floor – but Crystal Palace this Sunday is a final chance for some joy before we tick quickly into the 2020/21 season.

What kind of performance we see from Jose Mourinho’s charges is absolutely anyone’s guess, but the first half showing against Leicester City certainly gave some cheer and fans would welcome more of that, but there is also the Europa League question to answer and it will go down to the final day’s results with us currently sat in seventh place in the table and a point behind Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Whatever Sunday may bring, the curtain on 2019/20 comes down and we all know we need to strengthen further in the summer, we need a decent pre-season and we need to hit next year running, otherwise fears that the wheels have truly fallen off the Spurs bus will grow.

We can’t allow all that progress and a nice and bright shiny new stadium to fall away as our Champions League hopes did this season. The only question is, will we?

Until then, Palace and all three points, please!

Palace...

Win

Draw

ND …. Surely we don’t live with other people’s memories. We live with our own. But …. I totally get what you are saying, what you want, and why. I don’t disagree with any of that because it’s what I want too. Bit sad about your brother, mate!

  • Niall D says:

    Goeff,
Cheers m8. The way it is over 70%of the population support either Man U or Liverpool. At present I walk round my local town watching their houses festooned with Liverpool flags. For years it was Man u flags.
Ooooh you get their memories OK. Lol.
When did you lot last win the league. Ohh yes last century. Youve never won the premiership. Nearly done it against Leicester but you were Spursy. Nearly won the CL but you were Spursy.
Just want a wee bit of glory m8.

    • Hot Tottingham says:

But ND… What will those rival supporters still have to come back at you with when you say to them… “Spurs, winners of the 2021 EL cup final! Haha! So, put that in yer pipe and choke on it”!

As Jose once angrily said to the press, after losing another match after a really poor opening to his last PL season with them.. It’s about the whole story. He stuck up 3 fingers to say, I have won the PL 3 times. I have won more PL titles than the rest of the PL managers combined. (Something like that)… But, it was a little more than convenient that both Wenger and Fergie had both retired at that time… By the way, that typical Jose reaction came, after MU losing 0-3 to Spurs at Old Trafford. 😉

The MU and Pool supporters round your way will still have the last laugh when you realise that they need a lot more than just 3 fingers and many more hands to stick up for the appropriate number of trophies won, to put you back in your place.

This is when any potential near-future glory for Spurs lends itself more to the style and craft in which a cup was won and is less about just the hollow boast in winning it without that certain style. Not when the enemy are almost as bored of winning as us Spurs supporters are of not winning…

And, any respect they may begrudgingly show to Spurs, will only come from the style of football played by Spurs (if it’s good), more so than just the end result.

I have never envied the Gooners for winning titles and cups, when playing unattractive football. But I can certainly tip my cap to Liverpool this season and City before them.

ND….exactly what I have been trying to say lol! but failed miserably, ie “nearly men or Spursy” COYS

  • Geofspurs says:

ND …. To be honest BS made a valid point when we were talking about trophies a fair while back. He said that I’m probably not so focused on Spurs winning trophies because I’v seen them win so many of them in my life. Many supporters have seen NONE! I think he was right.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I’ve given myself a few headaches since the PL restart. Being very concerned about how the football looks under Jose. Win, lose or draw. And, everyone must know that I’m with Geof all the way, when it comes down to my desire for the beautiful game, over the ugly game. And, I can’t honestly see why not everyone would prefer that. Oh well, diversity is a fine thing in my world…

However, I do think it only fair that I give Jose and the players time to work it out. Because it is a shared responsibility, after all. And our players were not performing well at all or winning many games before JM arrived.

And, I have said on here before, that I feel we do have our fair share of flair in the team. In other words players that can still excite, as well as put in the hard graft. After all, MP was known to work them very hard. (Some say, too hard). Jose’s way may seem more stone-faced and workmanlike but if this is what’s needed under his watch, then this is what we will get. So be it. But Son, Kane and all can still work their magic. They can still excite us… It’s in their bones…

It is still about hard graft, albeit a very different form of hard graft with JM. But, whether it wins trophies for THFC, is another thing all together. It ain’t guaranteed, is it? I mean it still comes down to just the one final game, once you get to that final. And it’s more than likely that the other finalists are at least, on a par with Spurs. And just 1 solitary goal can see you lose or indeed, win. Regardless of whether that match was a stunning spectacle or a borefest. …………… Jose’s last cup final? MU 0-1 Chelsea. Yes, he lost!

Football supporters do of course remember well, the times of winning something and the celebrations they had. The bragging rights, etc. But when it comes to the most memorable of finals it won’t be the dull 1-0 borefest that shines the brightest and warms our hearts. It’ll be the final that entertained us the most, on that one special day.

It’ll be; the well made, well taken, winning goal that thrilled us when coming back from going 2 behind. It’ll be that one moment of Kane magic that stuns the rival supporter into silence. Or, it’ll be that rifled shot that was heading into the top corner with the last kick of the match, that somehow Hugo got a fingertip to, to just about tip the ball over the bar. It’ll be the end to end drama of two teams, equally matched. It’ll be the chip over the keeper that bounces in off a post or a last ditch tackle in front of an empty goal. “Blimey, where did Dier come from to do that”! Etc….

Trophies won are not just lumped together in one sticky homogenous gloop of bragging rights. They are about the special moments. The magic. The thrill. The excitement. From the opening 1st round match, to the last kick of the ball in the final itself…. It’s much more fun when it’s; “Where were you when we hit the Gooners 6-0 in the semi”? But, not that much fun at all, if it’s; “I’m not sure I saw Spurs’ winning goal… I think I nodded off shortly after half-time” ….. Ah but we won!

Anyway, I’m just saying…….. I do know that fun and entertainment is not everyone’s cup of tea. 😉

I do also know that when I’m making sweet, sweet love to a beautiful woman that there are folks out there that are simply in the act of procreation, for procreation sake…. It is what it is……

So good people of VS and, by the way of a distraction; What is your top ten rundown on the most dreary movies of all time? What is the most plain and uninteresting looking flower you’ve ever seen? Why are dark grey skies above, better than bright blue, sunny ones? And why are frowns so more attractive than smiles?

I’m only joking. It ain’t that bad…. Or should that be; “It ain’t that good”! LOL

Up Harry, Hugo, Son and all the lads! Up Levy! Up Jose! Up the Spurs! And Up VS!

And if you are a Gooner… Up Yours!

    Palace 0-6 Spurs!

Hugo Hat-trick. 2 from Son, 1 from Serge and Harry saves a pen!

  • Niall D says:

I think some have got the wrong end of the stick here.
We ALL WANT OPEN EXPANSIVE ENTERTAINING FOOTBALL.
But we are in a period of transition. I outlined our UNIQUE issues this year several times I won’t do it again.
If it is time for a period of workman like performances (not boring) to get us winning a few trophies a better league position which in turn should allow us to recruit get better players
I will tolerate it even support it.
What I’m saying is I’ll take a bit of short term pain for long term gain.
I don’t know if under the current Management this will happen But that is my hope.
For some here it’s a 4-3 defeat but didn’t we look good losing.
Guess what I still feel sh+T about the loss.
For me nearly isn’t good enough.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Don’t be angry ND… I wrote all that in jest. But what I also wrote, is also agreeing with you on a lot of what you have been saying. I was just putting up my thoughts on it ,not slating anyone else for theirs.

In fact the whole point of my post was to see both sides of the coin and then back Jose in his quest…..

It doesn’t mean that if I’m bored that I’m not really bored and I’ll pretend so… I also said that it may well also be exciting with the players we have… But it is also true that we may not win with him. But, I’m hoping that we do. And I’m positive that we can.

Mine was a post of positivity……. Honest!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I was expressing my passion for a beautiful game. That is all.

It doesn’t mean that I expect it to always be that way. It’s just a preference that is all…. Hey, a win is a win is a win…… I’ve said it many times under many Spurs managers… And many times I have been bored watching Spurs in the past and under m any managers… It ain’t nothing new. And I’ll still carry on watching until I drop…… Up the Spurs!

  • Niall D says:

No m8 not angry. Lol. Going up to the outlaws. Now that makes me angry.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Okay. Just like myself… Passionate!

  • Geofspurs says:

Whatever way we look at it …. Gotta love football!

    • Hot Tottingham says:

Or is it more a love/hate thing?

I love watching it. Love winning. Hate Losing.

Love Kane. Hate anyone who plays up top for anyone else…

      Love Hugo. Hate De Gea!

      Love WHL. Hate the Emirates.

      Love Spurs! Love Spurs!

  • PompeyYid says:

Passionate…. Praising All Super Spurs Is Our Neverending All Time Endeavour, or something like that off the top of my head. COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Many supporters will say winning trophies is all about getting revenge on the enemy. And not about how Spurs do it, just as long as they do it. Bragging rights and all that.

But, we can’t seriously brag to Pool, Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal and City fans by lifting 1 or even 2 trophies next season, let’s say… We will need to do it year after year for many years and they will have to stop their winning before we are even close to a worthwhile brag. And as Geof said, to me that is school playground stuff anyway.

I don’t need Spurs to win a trophy to feel better about not being the supporter of another club with a far superior cup record. But I do WANT Spurs to win a trophy for my own sweet satisfaction from it being my club. Not that I care about what other clubs have done or whatever their supporters may have to say about it. I don’t give a damn! I am a Spurs man and that’s that. They live in their footballing bubble and I will live in mine. My world is a Spurs world. Poor them, no matter the cups they have won. The silly words and their pathetic brags mean nothing to me. To me it’s like them boasting that their penis is bigger than mine. Whilst them ignoring the fact that my girlfriend is far more beautiful than theirs…. NANANANANA!

! come from a family that is not a “Spurs” family. There is mostly Chelsea, A Gooner, Millwall, Palace and even Pool fans… And many others that don’t give a damn about football.

With those that I talk football with, we just talk football. I will say “Great goal by Giroud the other night. And they may come back with; “Yeah it was, but Harry’s was better. Oh and what a save by Lloris”. And I might say; “True, but your goalie was crap on the night. Lucky that VAR came to your rescue”.

“So, what do you think about Jose?” And I might say, I thought he did a great job when he first went to your club Chelsea. But I’m not so sure about him now”. Then they say yeah he did win us our 1st title in 50 years and that was great”. But I know what you mean. Your Poch team played some great football. I was Jealous”. I say, true but we didn’t win anything”….. And on and on it will go about tactics, players etc… Then the Millwall fan will chip in with his bit and how he loves or hates what they are currently doing and so on …

Then it’s, “how’s the kids ?”blah blah…. No one’s bragging, no one’s crying… Same with my mates that support other clubs… Yes there’s a bit of boyish banter but they will say I liked watching Spurs under Poch but how did it get so boring so quickly. I might even say, “Arsenal are playing well this season” But, we don’t count up trophies. We don’t get out the year books or quote stats at each other… We just don’t. And any banter is purely for the fun of it…It ain’t serious. Simple. Ah but we a grown-ups after all…… Sort of! Not too grown up…. Thankfully.

I care what Spurs do. Not about what others have done before… My cup celebrations are reserved for me. And not with one thought for the enemy.

As Poch said let’s stop thinking about finishing above Arsenal. It’s not about them. It’s about us. Where we finish is down to us regardless of what they do… Stop the penis envy. Or indeed the penis boasting!

I just wanna see some great football before I die. There’ll be no room for cups in my coffin. Just sweet memories… The cups will be left behind…

  • block 108 spurs says:

    A bit off topic….

I have noticed Jose has made 2 new quotes, to go alongside his “parked the bus” from his chelsea days.

Since restart this season, he has said.. “now we (players) wash our faces” meaning put the sheff. utd loss behind us.

Secondly, v leicester…..”players to wear the skin of the fans” meaning to look at the game through fans eyes, and try to win for the fans.

Anyone else noticed the humorous comments ?? LOL… COYJ 🙂

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I love the irony of Jose’s original coining of that “park the bus” phrase. It came after a Chelsea draw with Spurs. He was insulting us…

  • 123spurs says:

The object of the game is to win, so why is there a cup at the end of it. Its about glory, medals etc. Achievements, not just a great performance and getting nothing from it,

    • Hot Tottingham says:

You are right, 123. It is about winning. I have never played a game of football without any intention other than aiming to beat the other lot. I never watch Spurs (or England) without wanting a win. And I am greedy too. I want it to be a convincing win. But a win will always do, if it can’t be convincing.

But this debate is more about how we win. And no one’s wrong in how they view it or what they want from watching football.

It’s always an ongoing debate with football supporters. I view it as a sport as well as an entertainment. Others just see it as a competitive sport and the end result is all that matters. I can never persuade anyone with my argument it seems and vice versa. But it’s good to talk… 🙂

  • Geofspurs says:

I suppose it’s all about enjoying the game, any game. Win, lose, or draw. Hundreds of teams vie for the FA cup every year but only one team can win it. Does that mean all the other teams are rubbish and they all have very unhappy supporters. If Rotherham knock out United in the third round and then get knocked out themselves in the fourth round do their fans think they are rubbish or do they have a brilliant memory.

How do League two supporters manage to keep following their chosen team if they have little hope of a trophy. I imagine they keep going to escape the humdrum of daily life, to enjoy their favourite game, or simply to find an emotional outlet to avoid insanity. Works for me.

Personally, since school sports day, I hate losing at anything except chess. Many of us are super competitive and want to win at everything. There’s nothing wrong with that except nobody can win at everything. So we just enjoy the activity and do our best. Enjoyment and trying to perform at our optimum level is never losing. Perhaps it’s just a matter of how competitive we are as individuals and the less competitive of us can focus more on the entertainment and less on being the absolute best …. for Rotherham fans, reality kicks in.

Why then do some supporters expect more from their club and players than they are able to give. We don’t expect that of ourselves or other people in our lives. We just accept that people are doing their best, or trying to. And why do some supporters become upset when their club does not do everything the way they want them to. That is so crazy that it’s hysterical. Imagine THFC being criticised for not keeping all VS members happy!!!! Good luck with that.

Unfortunately, success creates it’s own demon and Tottenham has enjoyed much success in its history …. there is immense expectation and pressure for it to continue. The more pressure there is, the more frustration there is and, for some, the less enjoyment there is.

A simple philosophy for supporters is …. it is what it is, accept it, live with it, and take as much enjoyment as we can from it.

Just like most things in the media this is all speculation and meaningless but …. if the media gets away with continual bullshit, why can’t I?

Apologies to Rotherham supporters …. no disrespect intended.

  • Niall D says:

Great debate guys. 4-0 tomorrow Kane 2 Sonny 1 Lucas 1.COYS.

  • Geofspurs says:

It’s great to see 100+ comments on threads again. VS is simply the best of Vital Football clubs. We should get a trophy! lol

    • TQ2Spurs says:

I probably made a nuisance of myself constantly nagging at DW and Vital over the delayed posting issue but it is clear from the response, since it has finally been fixed, the effect it was having on the site. Some great debating on this thread particularly which is good to see again, I haven’t had a lot of time to spend on here recently owing to retirement projects but they are nearly finished now so looking forward to joining in again in time for the upcoming transfer window speculation!

  • 123spurs says:

Yeah Geoff and u can be the captain and hold it

  • Geofspurs says:

Well, we would win it with style.
