Match Thread – A Palace Of A Distraction But Spurs Have To Look To 2020/21

|

It’s been a strange old season and it’s been a strange calendar year for Tottenham Hotspur. The highs of the Champions League Final and then the lows of seeing our form and usual performance levels fall through the floor – but Crystal Palace this Sunday is a final chance for some joy before we tick quickly into the 2020/21 season.

What kind of performance we see from Jose Mourinho’s charges is absolutely anyone’s guess, but the first half showing against Leicester City certainly gave some cheer and fans would welcome more of that, but there is also the Europa League question to answer and it will go down to the final day’s results with us currently sat in seventh place in the table and a point behind Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Whatever Sunday may bring, the curtain on 2019/20 comes down and we all know we need to strengthen further in the summer, we need a decent pre-season and we need to hit next year running, otherwise fears that the wheels have truly fallen off the Spurs bus will grow.

We can’t allow all that progress and a nice and bright shiny new stadium to fall away as our Champions League hopes did this season. The only question is, will we?

Until then, Palace and all three points, please!

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

I feel sorry for the clubs who can only afford players who are neither left footed or right footed …. and are pretty dismal at heading a ball.

  • Geofspurs says:

    Expectations for next season, anyone?

Looking at the final table there were only two clubs that were significantly superior to Spurs across the season. That is almost unbelievable given the football we played compared to previous seasons.

Comparing Spurs now to Spurs before, could be a mistake. Maybe we should just compare Spurs now to all other clubs now. The picture might be brighter.

The rise of optimism creeps over the football horizon once again.

  • 123spurs says:

of course players should be 2 footed, starting at an early age. At least be able to be comfortable with it.

  • jod says:

Geofspurs – To me a lot of clubs are in a rebuilding stage, not just us. Given that its very hard to predict how anyone (other than Liverpool and City) will perform over the next couple of years. To many fans its just about spending money, whoever spends most wins. In reality its about having a clear vision of what sort of a team you want and putting together a squad that can deliver it. Its what Klopp has done at Liverpool, its also what Wilder has done at Sheffield United with much lower resources. It remains to be seen how well the various clubs pushing for the top manage to do that.

  • Geofspurs says:

    123 …. Ditto

  • PompeyYid says:

123….that will do me, spot on. COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

Talking left n right, does anyone know the real reason why we hold up our right hand to 1…swear allegiance, 2…To tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth in court or rather in this case put your right hand on the bible. COYS

    • Hot Tottingham says:

Because our right hand is simply the correct hand to use. And our left hands are inherently evil..

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Spurs will finish 5th in the PL and maybe win the Carabao cup… Hey, don’i knock it, it’s a cup!

But I wonder; If Sours are 14th in the PL, after just 12 matches into the new season, will Jose get the push? Even if (as with MP), Spurs are just 3 points from joint 5th in the PL. Which of course is one place above where we finally finished?

Answer: Who cares, as long as we win a cup…

  • Geofspurs says:

PY …. You hold up your left hand if you don’t intend to tell the truth. This way everyone knows where they stand. Holding up both hands tells the court that you might, or might not, tell the truth depending on whether or not you will be incriminated by any potential answer to challenging and intrusive questions. Hope this helps.

  • Geofspurs says:

Ohh …. And suitably skilled footballers can use either foot in place of their hands.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I thought it was that the left hand is placed on the bilble or other holy book…

Why do we shake hands with our right hands? I have insulted more than on e person in my life by off ering them my left hand. But only because my right one was being used to hold a beer or fag or just because it was easier to use my left hand….. I always thought it was less rude than not shaking hands at all…… Now it is seen as a means of spreading a deadly virus…

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I wasn’t really joking with my first response to PY. In English, right also means correct. And I think that in one or two other languages that our word left is derived from other words that have negative meanings….. But this is a vague understanding that I may well have got wrong…

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I’m sure I read or heard or seen it in a movie? 🙂 That criminals in England at one point used to have letters tattooed or branded on their right hand that signified previous crimes. And so when they held up their right hand it was clear for the court to see their past misdemeanours. ???

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Still, none of this explains why it’s specifically the right hand in these things….. Maybe it is just to do with it being the dominant hand for most of humankind.

I do know that not so long ago children in English schools that were left-handed were forced to write with their right hand… Again I’m not sure why. Was it considered abnormal?

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Back to soccer!
TQ was right about us signing a young lad called Devine. Alfie Devine was signed yesterday…

Sounds like a 60’s pop star!

    • TQ2Spurs says:

HT…..the club have tried everything else to win some silverware, perhaps they are hoping for some future Devine intervention!

      Sorry…..I’ll get my coat. 🙂

  • Geofspurs says:

Nobody ever says, ‘He is my right hand man’! Does this insult left-handed people. Aren’t they good enough? The next protest movement will be ‘the left is the new right. Am I right? Or left?

  • Geofspurs says:

Edit …. ‘He is my left hand man’.

  • wentworth says:

    Dexter… on the right side.

Sinister…. on the left side. (also means evil or harmful)

Ambidextrous …able to use right hand, left hand equally well. Also refers to feet.

Fred Trueman was ambidextrous. Could throw from the boundary with either arm.

Ted Dexter was right hand bat and excellent mid pace right arm bowler. Captain of Sussex and England.

We have a left handed tea cup at home. You can buy left handed scissors for schoolchildren.

Anyway all you young footballers keep practising with the weaker foot until it comes naturally. It is possible. Don’t be just “sinister”.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

The new kits have been released today. £70 for a top. Is there no limit to Levy’s take take take attitude. Ticket prices also increased at a time when many people have lost jobs or been forced to take reduced pay. Disgraceful but not surprising

  • PompeyYid says:

Some good humorous answers to my question, though many might be true.

I do remember left handed kids at school being taught to use their right as if they were odd/strange, now my old man, RSM in the Army for 30 years, god rest his sole, was kak handed, left, but everything he did except writing was right handed, example laying out the dinner table, his words eat correctly lol!

Our younger bruv was also kak handed, but it never used to faze him.

Though when I was a kids football team coach I used to make practice with their weaker foot and it did make them better players.

Makes you wonder about the Left side or Right of politics, think better to be fence sitting middle of the road lol.

On football I see a £40m bid has been accepted for Ake from money bags/deep pockets MC, see no competition from us as we cannot. COYS
